Smell of burning oil

the smell of burning oil gets worse as you press the loud pedal, so i thought it was the gearbox leaking fluid over the cat, as I have read about it here before, sure enough, after an inspection, this is what it is.

I cannot find the original thread on this, so if anyone has any guidance upon how to fix this, is it something I can do myself, or an audi only job, and indeed the likely cost, please let me know.

thanks in advance.

This seems to be a particular weakpoint on the A8/S8; my neighbours face-lift S8 started leaking at about 60k miles (fortunately for him just within his 3 year warranty period). Mt son's pre-facelift A8 4.2 started at about 90K miles and my face-lift S8 started at 46k miles (outside warranty - of course!!!). I decided to let my local stealer do the job(Northampton Audi) - cost of new seal and oil less than £10 but total bill about £270. The repair job is reasonably straightforward but would be a real pig to try and do on the garage floor with the car on axle stands. No doubt a specialist would do the job more cheaply because the labour rate would probably be about half that charged by the Audi stealers.

Took my mechanic 2 hours to do mine, cost me £70 after audi had 3 goes at sending the correct seal, mine was the offside front driveshaft seal chucking oil onto the exhaust heatshield.

Didn't start smelling until the shield got hot which unfortunately it didn't do on the test drive before I bought it.
