dazr32
hello all went out for a drive today with the family in a clean car, not speeding or talking on the phone or looking somewhere i shouldnt, local plod had the (anpr) camera van out and about twenty traffic cars pulling everyone in site, me included. i pulled over safe in the knowledge that there was nothing wrong with my car. then the officer drew my attention to my illegal number plates because they look grey coming towards him. the thing is they sell the exact same colour plates in halfords which are 100% road legal. the plates i have got are the carbon embossed ones so the number is on the plate rather than in it, however he never said there was a problem with that just that they were san serif and not solid. i think he has too much time on his hands, all the letters and numbers are the correct size and also spaced correctly. it p*sses me off when they have got nothing better to do with there time when there are people out there driving with no tax/insurance/mot and disqualified yet they pull me for such a trivial thing. i appreciate there may well be plod on here and i dont mean to bring them down as i am sure they do a good job in certain rolls and i also have a mate who is an inspector in the force but for fcuk sake. dazr32
had a look at that snoopy and my letters conform to that criteria. what i cant get my head around is the fact that halfords sell the exact same colour letters and they are 100% legal as i said previously, i went in there today after i was pulled to check. mulkbear
Just goes to show my mate has been driving around in my old Fait Punto for around 6 months and it has had not M.O.T for 4 weeks and when i took it to work to get it M.O.T 'ed it failed on:- Front tyre's worn to excess Brake lamps in/op Rear no plate not visible (need cleaned) And it just go to show you drive you clean and in good working order vehicle and get pulled by the FUZZ Yet my mate drives a unroad worthy, Very unclean and un-M.O.T vehicle for 4 weeks yet gets no bother from the FUZZ Life is unfair
dazr32
the letters and numbers are the correct size and height but they are set on top of the perspex rather than the traditional style which is inside the perspex if you know what i mean. they look to the naked eye exactly the same as the old plates. R32North
[ QUOTE ] if i knew how to add a fcukin pic then i would but this is about my limit unless shown once mate but the web address of the place i bought the plated from is www.gtgrafix.com and i have just been on there now and it says they are legal so the old bill that stopped me can spin. [/ QUOTE ] Most of what they have to offer is illegal, all those fonts and styles are def not legal. The embossed style is but you are walking a fine line with the carbon detailing of the lettering, even tho they say its legal. Letters should be plain black and the backing should be a specific yellow and plain also. Letters have to conform to a certain font, size and style but you are allowed tolerances within those! Spacing of letters is also controlled.
dazr32
totally agree with what you are saying mate does it basically mean though that you can have embossed lettering on its own and carbon lettering on its own but you cannot combine the two. swil00
I've got the very same style of plate on mine. Never had any bother with them (yet) as they look like normal plates from a couple of car lengths way. That said I've never drove past an ANPR van with them on, but I'm sure I read somewhere that they stopped using them as they weren't 100% accurate at reading reg plates. dazr32
thats interesting i will have to have a chat with my mate. to be honest i think the officer had to much time on his hands but i can see it being an issue in the future if he stops me again. i will call the company direct and see what they say and if they can provide any info to support there web statement that the plates are indeed legal. skifly
swil00 - the anpr system (admittedly there are quite a few) is actually very accurate. I have 'some' knowledge of these systems and have even personally tested them (as per the PCN i received for forgetting to pay the CC on monday). Some of the lowest numbers are around the 65-70% recognition rate "even on non-standard plates" including script type fonts! Thats why you will normally find for things like the congestion charge cameras there is more than one camera mounted on each pole. Even at night and with headlights etc the cameras hive a high accuracy and can even use infra-red targeters to pick up the plates. Also the VOSA people can often be found on the road from blackfriars bridge up towards farringdon doing the spot checks. I have probably seen them a couple of times in the last month or so. As for the legality of the plate i guess you should get on the DVLA site and check out the limits - i know mine strictly is not legal due to the spacing but i could probably argue something about perspective through the perspex if i really needed to as its only about 2 mm too close.
