bec21tt
Hi folks, How long should the battery last on the key fobs? I went to use mine the other day & nothing, zilch, nada I've only had the car since March Had to dig out the spare set. Bec
CraigR
Its probably just the key needing re-coding to the car again, have a read in your handbook will explain how to do it in there I have had this happen regularly with the B7 S4, it only happened once with my old car but the new one is loosing the coding at least once a week
Sparky
If you play with the key when out of range of the car, it can de-code itself. It's something like needing only 10 presses of the unlock/lock button when the car isn't in range can stop the key working. Battery life is usually good as I got 2.5 years out of one of my sets and then sold the car - so it didn't actually run out.

spacelord
There is an issue with the keys of early B7s. It tends to lose its configuration every now and then. Mine used to do it all the time too (april model). The dealer should be able to sort it out and get you a set of new keys within warranty. Chrisg
July 1999 quattro T Sport is still going strong on the original battery........ and we have only ever used the one key as well
UBM
You can buy spares from the stealers - about 3 pounds each! Try recoding it like the guys above have said - put it in the ignition and leave it for 3 seconds. Then it should sync again! Craig - Whip the S4 in mate, all the B7's had an intermittent decoding problem. You need two new keys coding FOC. I had mine done just after collection - under warranty of course! UBM
Yep - Every three times i had to manually unlock the car! They admitted it was a fault with the original B7's. They need to order you two more keys - which takes 7-10 days, then need your details, drivers license and the car! Any problems - PM me, Bedford Audi sorted mine! CraigR
Been on the phone to them this morning UBM, yes it has been a warranty issue with some of the B7 cars, service dept called up and will order the keys today, take the car in for 15 min job to recode the new one's to the car. Cheers for the info Wonder how much they would be for 2 new keys, out of warranty?? anyone know?
bec21tt
I tried doing the re-sync thing & it didn't work So it looks like a trip to Audi
CraigR
Update for me - Just had a call from Audi, keys will take same 7 - 10 days as yours did UBM, as i will be out of the country, Audi will deliver them to the house and take away the old ones, no need to have the car Very good service again from Specialist Cars
DanG
Indeed this is an issue Audi are aware of. I have been on the 'spare' key for about a month now and now this one is beginning to play up. Keys been ordered with the local audi dealership for a couple of weeks now. By the way to replace one of these keys if lost is about $125 dollars over here, so probably £100 odd inc programming etc back home.
bec21tt
I rang the dealer & they said to pop in with both sets of keys & they'd sort it out while I waited. But whilst out during the day the problem rectified itself & now the key fob is fine. So I didn't bother going. But I will if it keeps happening. Paley
It's worth getting them changed even if it clears. I had coding probs with one of the keys which self-rectified. Then the other one - which didn't. Getting new keys next week but stealer says don't forget to bring the plastic key as well. Can't quite understand why. There's no coding on the plastic ones and presumably the lock imprint is the same. ... maybe not.
Sparky
The plastic ones contain a chip too. They can start the car, albeit only once.

Milo
Are there any symptoms for an 'about to expire' battery other than the obvious it doesn't work at all? Mine is 2 and half years old now and when I came back to the car today it wouldn't work. It was somewhere where I have parked before without problems and there are no (visible) masts/aerials in the area. I tried for a good minute or so but nothing. I had another appointment nearby so walked there and when I came back 30 minutes later, it worked fine. I didn't know whether this is just one of those odd things that happen from time to time or whether it is a sign the battery needs replacing. I'd rather replace it now if it was. Sparky
A little tip is when your battery is really weak and you need to get into your car, hold the keyfob to your chin and press the button. The keyfob uses your body to amplify the signal and it works. You can test this in a carpark - walk until your keyfob doesn't work, then try it - usually works even if you look stupid in the process! Milo
I remember seeing Jeremy Clarkson doing this on TV! I tried as best I could to hold the fob against me head while pointing my head at the car 2 foot away without looking more a tw4t than I already did I gave up and nonchantly walked away like nothing was wrong in case anyone had been watching. A great day to leave your mobile in the house Like I said, it worked when I came back and it's been OK since so I wondered if it was just one of those things or an indicator the battery is almost goosed. Sparky
Well probably best to get the batteries replaced. VW told me to renew them every two years to be safe.
