New Car Time

Hi all,

I am thinking of selling my Audi 2003 A4 1.9tdi. No real excuse why. Its a great car and I have enjoyed owning, driving and customising it.

But, its my 2nd A4 and I'm thinking that at 23 years old I should be experimenting with other marques while I can still be foolish in my purchases. ECLIPSe.gif

Ideally I would like a second hand X plate S4, but the insurance and running costs would not be financially feasible for my age and daily mileage.

So... What would you ever so knowledgeable chaps and chapesses recommend?

Im not really a badge snob, and want something quick but economical (a contradiction I know), with the option of tuning. I was very impressed how much power gain was acheived from the 1.9tdi just with a Revo chip.

I have been looking at the A4 2.5 tdi quattro, but with its 4wd and big engine its no quicker than my current car and fairly thirsty with it.

I'm open to suggestions. Budget around £20k.

I appreciate your views.

Try an S3 unless you feel you need a car the size of an A4.

If you want same build quality but with decent performance it's a good choice. Running costs aren't so bad either and v.easy to modify if you get bored with the standard output.

Otherwise I'd always thought about a BMW 330d or Alfa 156 GTA..

Had a 225 S3 before the A4 but the company I then worked for required a 5 door car so had to buy the A4. The S3 was fun but not massively quicker than the A4. But then again, a chipped S3 would probably be great fun!

The 330d Sport is a decent car. Wonder what sort of mileage returns can be acheived? Mid 30's?

I will also have a look at the Smart Brabus. Its all good fun looking anyhow!

Was behind a 156 Gta the other day, he was 3 up and still got a good bit of distance away on a short blast. Was surprised until I found out the engine spec and bhp!

The other half is keen on a Seat Ibiza Cupra tdi which goes like buggery great fuel etc, But..

1) She will kill me if I got one.

2) Not sure if its taking too much of a step back to boy racer.

The decisions!

If you are thinking along the Seat route consider the Fabia vRS first, much better and cheaper

A second hand Leon Cupra R would be a lot of fun as well.

Would still plump for an S3, build quality is much better. People are right about Alfa's if it doesn't go wrong then you still have to contend with Alfa dealers who are worse than Audi ones.

Problem with BMW 320 or 330d's is that everyone knows they are nippy cars and give good mpg returns so have good residuals and harder to get a deal on.

All the VRs's are nice bits of kit. The 1.8T engine is very well catered for in the upgrade department as well.

I do like the Seat Leon Cupra. Was just going to see what they spring as the new Cupra on the new shape Leon which is fairly nice IMO.

Agreed on the BMW, the price seems ok until you see the mileage, which is more often than not pretty high.

The other thing about the 3 series is that you see them everywhere. A testament to their quality possibly.

Just watching top gear, perhaps I should rob a bank and get a BMW M6.
