stevebower
Sorry - definite 'newby' question here: What sort of engine oil should I put it? I think the car is set up for variable service intervals (how can I tell? the monitor says 10k to go), but the handbook only mentions a spec, not Synthetic etc. As there will be some time before the service, I want to get the right stuff in, but not pay stealer prices. Wilfred
Its a standard VW spec oil. Can remember the code off the top of my head but if you ring a dealer's parts department they will tell you.
Ska
I think its 10/30W semi-synthetic Some folk have used fully synthetic but report an increase in the monthly consumption over the standard 1 litre per 1000miles...welcome to TSN BTW
Huss
For AVS you will need this, or equivalent from other than Castrol... Lifted from Audi website.... One of the key components of the AVS system is the engineering and technology of Audi engines including areas such as precise machining of components, honing of cylinder bores and closer bearing tolerances. This is allied with the use of advanced formulation Long Life oils such as Castrol SLX OW30 Long Life 2., which have been specially formulated for Audi. It's approximately £9.00 a litre from Halfords... You can get the specc'd oil cheaper on the web but in much larger quantities. Have been looking at the latest Mobil 1 Long-Life oil as a subsitute but need to check its compliance to Audi spec...the original Mobil 1 didn't. stevebower
Became an neccessity, bought 1l of Shell Helix Ultra £16.44 from stealer. Sheesh! Found Demon Tweeks on web have 4l for £26ish. The consumption rate info is very useful - will just carry a small bottle when touring. Be interested to know if Mob1 is ok. Laffer
Prolly wrong of me I know.... I have always left this to the stealer. Mine does not appear to use oil (unless there is a leak!) This 1L every 1000 is quite worrying! Anyways, rightly or wrongly the Audi Stealer I use puts in Castrol GTX Magna-Tec.............. Must get the manual out and have a squint....... Laffer. Ska
You can't go wrong with Magnatec I used it in most of my previous motors. Fingures crossed the engines as sweet as day one
paulifa1
I'll second magnatec, it's a good semi sythetic and should reduce friction on start up. I'd avoid fully synthetics if I were you, they tend to cause leaks, especially on higher mileage engines.
paulifa1
Also on the topic of AVS, I think this might be another problem waiting to happen, like the failing transmission issues. I really would ignore this and change oil and filter every 10K max if I were you guys with this, extended service intervals only end up meaning one thing, reduced engine life!! oilman
Magnatec is not ok for AVS, it does not meet the specs. Cheers Simon
stevebower
I am about to cjhange the transmission oil anyway, as it needs 'the usual' seal replacement. I'll change the engine oil anyway, as I like to do this before the winter, but probably leave the AVS for the other items. Steve PS Just had cambelt done at Ric Woods (South Manchester). £235! Hudson
Hi, Sorry to butt in and all.... but £235 for the cambelt !! did that include all the tensioners and rollers ? The water pump perhaps ??? And do you have a contact for them, i live close to the Trafford Centre. Cheers.
willg60
What does AVS stand for please?
stevebower
Bill was for belt only (I think). No advice that tensioners needed. Water pump checked - no leaks, bearings ok. AVS is Audi Variable Service - my car was mainly on motorways, so service intervals were longer. The car can be set for AVS or fixed. Ric Woods is www.ricwood.com. I hope he's ok - the gearbox leak needs doing next. It's good to save a few bob, but I really want the car looking after properly.
