RNS-E DVD unreadable in cold weather?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Anyone suffering from an unreadable DVD in the RNS-E.

This morning, shortly after setting off (and shortly after having scrapped the ice off the car) the RNS-E screen came up with the red warning message "DVD Unreadable".

By the time I got to work everything seemed okay. Just wondering if its (a) just the cold in the mornings that is causing problems, or (b) the DVD is dirty and could do with a clean.

It'll be condensation on the laser Crasher. Better to let the car warm up a bit before trying to use it. Should only take 5 mins or so 169144-ok.gif

Is it a genuine Audi DVD or a copy? Copies are more likely to suffer from read problems, and more likely to burn out the laser quicker.

First step is to clean the laser lens with a cleaning disc, second is to clean by hand (as Cockney Boy suggests) and only if both those don't solve it do you need to replace the laser.

Had this problem for a while - for me it was intermittent, it would suddenly say unreadable, I would eject the DVD, push it back in, it would work again. A few weeks back it stopped working almost completely: if I tried to enter an address, it would freeze my unit for minutes, then ask me to insert a DVD navigation disk - it would still however work if I selected destinations from memory - well, some times.

I just went through my old CD collection and found a CD titled: "CD Laser Lens Cleaner With Voice & Music Instructions - City Disk CD 2002 - It's Music"

The CD has a little brush and when you play it says to play track 7 - 2 minutes later, my RMS-E is back to normal! -- A quick google search shows a few of these cleaner CDs with a brush for as little as a couple of quid - try it! - much easier than taking the unit out and trying to get to the laser.

Mine was doing this on warm days too.

What I did was to use a DVD-ROM cleaner (CD with a small brush on it) this worked for a while until the laser fell on it's legs.

Bought a new DVD drive and installed it myself - all running smoothly.

Replacing the laser was more a fanny job than replacing the DVD drive; so for an extra £20 I replaced the whole drive.

Good luck
