xp no longer recognising devices

ok got a pc of a friends he wants me to fix, problem is anythign you do, plug in or install xp wil not recognise the device and wont install it , even if you try to update driver - nothing , any ideas before i do a complete re install of windows ?

Im guessing these are USB devices. Id be inclined to re-install the USB card drivers themselves (not the plugin device)

nope anythign you plug in , tried installing a pci card, and that would not install either

Sounds like a bios setting/issue. There should be a section in the bios where you can set it to Plug & Play Operating System, also there might be a USB setting to change as well.

again checked that all seemed as it should real pain as i dont really want to re install Xp them lose everything 'just to see if it works' royal pain in the bum

Hate to say this mate but i had this a couple of months ago,pc went back to my friend who built it (a pc genius i might add not an amateur) & it did end up being a reinstall job!
