New S4 Noise

I'd been thinking that's not a great noise for a few days, but this morning clinched it. Not exactly the noise you want your V8 making!

I'm sure my Xenons are knackered as well even though the supplying dealer said they'd been checked and didn't need the recall rework (more like couldn't be ar*ed to do it). So it'll be a trip to the dealer with a minor shopping list!

Sounds like you got it!

Here's the thing you need to print off and stick up your dealers nose wink.gif

Scotty, I flashed the bulletin at the dealer today (in a vain attempt to get them to pre-order the parts), they pointed out that it's theoretically not applicable to my model.

The bulletin states engine codes BHF and BAS. Mine's BBK.

What is your engine code.

They are happy to look at it but unfortunately won't pre-order the parts. Unfortunately the Master Tech was off sick, so there was no-one technical to talk to.

Apparently only the Master Tech's work on S & RS cars. Good to know (if its true).

Goes in a week on Wens, so I guess we'll find out then. Got a Jimmy Saville style fix list for them to sort.

Any extra info you have in advance would be much appreciated. 169144-ok.gif

Somehow I doubt that all the S & RS work will wait from Thurday until Monday due to the Master Tech being off. But a nice guideline.

I'll have a look at my engine tomorrow. IIRC my number was outside the range of the bulletin but the work still solved it. Bear in mind this bulletin is for the US market. Maybe you can get the dealer to check the UK system.

The difficulty will be is it gets a bit warmer and then you won't know if they've solved it. crazy.gif

Thanks mate! Your engine code is on the log book BTW.

The master tech thing made me feel better about letting them loose on my car for a while. Don't want the hassle of getting locked into a series of dealer visits. None of it's little foibles real matter. :fingerscrossedsmiley

I had this noise on mine last winter, so when the service fell due in June I showed them the bulletin and the work was done. The noise has not recurred this winter.

My engine code is BBK, but my VIN was prior to when the revised part was fitted as described in the bulletin.

Mine has been booked in for a noise like this only when weather really cold. Master Tech had not heard of this bulletin (and I did not have it to hand) but he did mutter something about the inlet manifold(!) and a service bulletin for that. He also said they have some new software for my car but was not specific on what this did or did not do. They want the car for two days!

My VIN is before that set out in this Tech Bulletin so I will be taking it in with me!

Hashluck, be sure to let us know how you get on. Mine went in a couple of days ago (just for the day so they didn't get to hear the noise 1st hand). They wouldn't do the service bulletin change because it's alledgedly not applicable to my engine code.

Can't really be ar*e'd to leave the car with them overnight so they can hear it. From what Scotty & S4Tony have said the mod worked for them so I don't see why they won't do it.

What rev's do you get the noise at. Mine does it in two rev bands 1800-2000rpm and 2500-3000rpm & like you say only from a cold start on a cold day (<8 deg C). It'll only happen for the first couple of minutes.

Sounds like the same thing to me except has to be VERY cold to happen. I don't take the car over 3000rpm when cold so not sure if it happens a higher revs. Anyway they wanted it for 2 days (maybe 3!) plus they think they can sort it with another bulletin and they will update software so at least they are trying (and I get a loan car of course)

OK it took me a little longer than I promised but my car is a BBK engined S4.

Also my VIN number is about 65,000 before the lowest VIN that it should affect. This may be because the bulletin is from the US. Perhaps they have a different VIN allocation range i.e. it could be earlier European cars affected. I've no idea if there is an applicable UK bulletin.
