They conclude with:

'In the previous three nights, I've only amassed 15 hours sleep. But the urge to take the R32 for a thrash on my favourite B-roads is still there. I actually go to bed, but keys in hand, I come very close to heading back out. And if I'd had the 130i? The thought wouldn't have crossed my mind.'

They also say:

'The Golf's natural state is understeer, but there's some adjustability too. With the front wheels struggling to grip, the Haldex four-wheel-drive system pushes power to the rear so, particlarly on corner exit, you can use the throttle to ease understeer and tighten the Golf's cornering line, which is hugely effective, and entertaining'

The car they test is a manual although they do criticise the gear change slightly - not as good as the BMW in this respect

Just read the report - it seems pretty fair, although I dont see the BMW as being a direct competitor, the 130 is probably a good car but there is no way I would consider buying one, other cars to consider would be the new civic type r - the new subaru impreza etc which i believe will attract the type of market the r32 is trying to aim for -

The 130 should be more like the Z3 M coupe
