shark_90
Hi all, I think it's about time I addressed the issue with my coolant gauge being somewhat tempremental. Now I know the part is £22, but I've heard it can be a bit of a pig to get to. Does anyone have an idea of where it is and whether I'm likely to be able to easily replace it myself? I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but draining the coolant etc might be a little too much for me. Does anyone have any info? Thanks Ben
UBM
Is this the same bit as the fuel temperature sender?
shark_90
I don't think it is, no.. I know where that is It must dip into the coolant somewhere (obviously) but the question is where. I don't know if it's on a pipe (like the fuel temp sender) or in the engine somewhere. I do need your blinging advice for something else though! Changing the electric window switches..
DHA
It will be £72 for the dealer to do it. Its in the coolant tank, if you pull the wire and the plug out you can see the sensor. Just be careful of whats inside.
shark_90
They quoted me best part of £170! I presume by that the coolant needs to be changed?
DHA
Shouldn't do, unless it has been contaminated. Try another dealer. Is the tank in the left of the engine bay (as you look at it from the front of the car)?
shark_90
Behind the block, to the left. Next to the battery.
Durrsaku
I changed mine by myself Ben about 6 months ago. It is very easy to do. Make sure the car is cool as you can burn your hands. It is a one hand job. You have to unclip a few hoses that run on top back end of engine to get access at the back. Make sure you aproach it from the right hand side of the engine compartment. When you pull the sensor out make sure you have got the ruber seal out otherwise it will be difficult to fit the new one and this will result in loss of coolant. If everything goes well you shouldn't loose a lot of it as i did. Bled the system afterwards just time consuming. Let me know if you want pics with it. shark_90
Thanks for the info chaps. Now I know where it is, I'll try to have a look at it tonight. I'll let you know if I need any more info Blingmaster Genti!
Mollox
Are you getting the bloody low coolant warning Shark? Especially on cold mornings and when the car's sat for a while?
shark_90
No Molly, not getting that one. Never have done in nearly 40k, and it hasn't needed any. The gauge on the dash goes up and down as it pleases. Unfortunately the climate is also controlled by the same sender, so when the sender is reading -100 (ie off the neg scale) the climate thinks the engine is cold and compensates by warming the air up Didn't matter so much in the summer cos it was generally on LO all the time anyway, but now I want it at ~21 degrees it's getting annoying. Too clever for it's own bloody good!
Durrsaku
One more thought, BE CAREFUL WITH THE RETAINING SPRING, you could loose that down the engine bay and it will be bl**dy job to find.
shark_90
That's good advice, I lost a headlamp cover down there once and never got it back. I now have another cover from Vagparts, but the headlamp keeps steaming up

I just used some duck tape to stop it steaming up. How much was the new one?
