Does my 'R' have a 'BAD' drink problem, or what???

Just checkin to make sure im not the only one constantly at the pump!

Maybe i shouldnt be comparing it with my previous car, although on paper they were about the same mpg.(bmw330ci)

Its not quite working out that way.

I pretty much drive an even split m'way/town miles per week.

If i filled up from empty - aprpox 60ltrs, this would give me approx 280mls to almost empty. Granted this is not tickling the gas. Ive got a heafty right peg now & again, but this equates to only 21 miles per gallon.

The real shock was when i took it on a run to Glasgow last w/e, with the lads for the boxing. Fair play it was carrying an extra 1/4 tonnes wieght, but i was still only averaging 23/24 to the gallon, saying that we did 210miles in 2.5hrs (85mph average).

what i did notice was no matter if i was flying at 130mph or poodleing at 90mph; it would always sit at 23/24mpg

are these figures realistic...AM I NORMAL???

Or is this a small price to pay for the thrill of it all?

Just done, London Edinburgh and back 830 miles odd at 23.5 average mpg.

Thats at 85-90 (KM ph- cough, cough) constant. I have never seen better than 25 mpg. Then again the R does have a frisky engine and it is not made to sit at 3k rpm constant.

The above average rpm was between 3800k and 4500k rpm for 10 hours driving time. 169144-ok.gif

Mizak, I don't think there's anything wrong there. I get on average 280-300 miles out of a tank, ave mpg is low 20's, between 21mpg & 24mpg I guess.

Like shark says, did you buy the R for it's fuel economy?? I don't think so!!

As for the AmD treatment, can't comment as I've not tuned my car, but I guess it could make a little improvement.

Mizzak - your economy (or lack of it) is completely normal. You shouldn't expect to get more than 23-24 on average.

A properly tuned R will give slightly better economy, simply because the remap is properly optimised for the individual engine, rather than the generic map that VW apply, even with the #6463 update.

After the AmD Stage 4+ upgrade, I posted that I managed to get 31.5 mpg on a 90 mile trip back from London, at a constant 80 mph set on the cruise control - this was based on the trip computer.

Daemon commented that, as I run a high pressure fuel reg, the reading would be out, as he believed that the ECU measures economy by the amount of squirts of fuel the injectors are making and, because the fuel is being forced in at a higher pressure, the ECU wouldn't know about it so would be making false assumptions.

I needed to prove my own sanity, so did exactly the same trip back from London, filling up in Hammersmith, then when I got back. Using the good old number of litres into gallons and the number of miles, the car was actually doing 31.6, when the trip computer was reading 31.5, so, all things told, it is about spot on.

It's something to do with the undying desire to put your foot down to hear the unmistakeable sound of the burbling V6 that has a lot to do with the fantastically bad economy.

It could be worse - I used to get 19 mpg out of my S4 EEK2.GIF which is why I only had it for 6 months...

Oatz - what was you driving a Sherman tank?

I can handle the fuel consumption, i just wanted to get the general feeling to make sure it was normal.

I shouldnt complain, as for that kind of performance & looks its a small price to pay.

Thanks Chaps!

I was running a Supra twin turbo with just under 500bhp but got bored of having to wear a medallion everytime I drove it

This may answer your question. When enjoying myself i get about 210 on a full tank. (368 BHP) but after this weekend i have shagged my discs so i have been driving very responsibly to work. its a 16 mile journey there and 16 miles back and i have been doing...wait for it........34.8 mpg doing a steady 60-80 mph. so yes the more power you have under normal driving conditions you get better fuel economy, i guess the car does not have to work as hard

From my car being std, then going to a AMD stage 2.5, then to a AmD stage 4 and now to the unofficial AmD stage 7 normal driving i have got better fuel economy under normal responsible driving. Driving her hard yes the economy is worse but i guess that is what you have to put up with to get more power. 169144-ok.gif

And don't be forgetting the R32 just owns the E46 330i hands down. Well, mine did this morning when a clubsport thought it would be able to burn me over a roundabout into some roadworks, left it for dust once I was clear of the roadworks and through the next roundabout. The 'damp' road probably gave em food for thought too.
