I am really keen on both these cars but i cant make my mind up! i went to see a focus st at the weekend in performance blue which is a similar color to the RS. i liked the interior and the sound of the 5pot engine but wasn't totally satisified with the outside look. i was told that it would be worth seeing a electric orange one as these stand out.

I have been keen on the GTI from day one and booked a test drive. went to the dealership on the day of the test drive to find they didnt have the car! booked again as sometimes these mistakes do occur and it happens again! What can i say about WAYSIDES CUSTOMER RELATIONS? CRAP!

didnt bother ask for another test drive! did see a red gti in a showroom look really nice, but i would still like a drive of one!

has anyone driven both cars? what are the pros and cons of the GTI? if any?

In gear acceleration between say 1500 & 5000 RPM is faster in the Focus. The Golf is faster if you thrash it. I think the Focus is a little quieter at a cruise, but the golf is better built.

Also the Focus makes the golf look expensive, as to match the spec of an St2 focus, youd have to add xenons, 18's & Soundpack to the golf. that makes the golf (20k + 750+400+750) nearly 22k, whereas the st2 is £18,495 and will be discounted. Residuals will be a little stronger on the Golf though, but im not sure it would be worth 3.5 k more in 3 years time.

Im trying to make the same decision myself. Have you noticed the boot space is tiny in the focus, as the exhaust system takes up the space where the spare wheel normally sits in a standard focus, and the spare sits in a recess in the boot itself. You wouldnt get 2 suitcases in a Focus ST, whereas the golf would easily take them.

The discounts are available through brokers, but you will have to wait about 8-10 weeks after the official launch on 15th January.

To get one for the first week of Januray means pying the full price, I have tried two Ford dealers and they are happy to turn you away, rather than discount. Most of the dealers are only gettig six cars between now and March.

Tried the VW dealer for Gti deals, as you guessed no discount and the thought of a seven month wait.

Heres the UK CAR BROKER prices:

(Ford Price / UK CB Price)

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST 3DRS (225) EURO IV - £17,495 / £14,098

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST-2 3DRS (225) EURO IV - £18,495 / £14,888

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST-3 3DRS (225) EURO IV - £19,495 / £15,678

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST 5DRS (225) EURO IV - £18,095 / £14,572

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST-2 5DRS (225) EURO IV - £19,095 / £15,362

FORD FOCUS 2.5 ST-3 5DRS (225) EURO IV - £20,095 / £16,152

Not bad, not bad at all. If I was looking for a decent Hot Hatch and a great price, I'd be hard pushed to look elsewhere!!!

Buy the Focus and save a fortune!

Or wait 3-6 months and the GTI will be available with a good discount.

The Golf GT-Tdi 140 has £3000 off at the moment and is a good deal if you like the Golf!

Only time i noticed big discounts on the GTI was when it was first launched. DriveTheDeal was giving 2K off and there was another firm giving £2300 off min. Not seen that type of deal since and if demand keeps as it is i don't know if we will again soon. Its all down to demand and supply.

If we will that will be great as my Father wants one now after driving mine. grin.gif

There is no doubt that the Golf GTi is a fab car!

However, compared with the competition its looking way to expensive!

Golf's are overpriced and (apart from the GTI) are not selling hence massive discounts off even the best models (GT TDi). Even your dealer will admit this if asked!

It's not fully realised that models such as the GTI and R32 are flagships in VW's range of Golf models. The GTI represents a very minor percentage of Golf sales, the R32 even less, but they serve to be perceived as a kind of 'halo' to the whole range of Golfs and all that matters is that they are good value for money. The Mk5 GTI is very good value for money....It's "competitors" might have more neddies and be cheaper but just ask yourself which would you rather be owning and driving in 3 years time? The GTI is the only true allrounder - Absolutely no bull-poo involved!

The Golf always has been considered as "overpriced" but if you only pay peanuts you only get monkeys! Cost isn't everything.
