peterb
With the new 40/60 Torsen apparently becoming standard, does anyone know whether it will be possible to retrofit this onto existing quattros (eg, my RS6)?
Chris_B
Humm, would be nice wouldn't it? I think the Torsen is integrated into the gearbox on the Tip models (if I remember rightly) and the 5 HP 24A isn't likely to be made available with it, in fact the upcoming S8 with 60/40 split might not even be the usual 6 HP 26A for the same reason. peterb
As far as I can tell, from ELSA, the Torsen module is mounted in its own housing, bolted onto the tail of the gearbox. It can be removed and replaced with the gearbox in situ.
sitas3
Peter, realistically would you really want to do this? surely the benefit of the new system would only really become apparent on the track under v. hard driving?
Chrisg
Simon , Peter already gets to North Norfolk very quickly - he's obviously going for an even quicker time !

Looking at it, yes it does look to be attached right on the end of the gearbox, but it is part of the assembly ZF supply; as in the gearbox info sheet (PDF). I'm not sure if the new S8 gearbox will be a 6 HP 26A with a different Torsen bolted on, or a totally new gearbox.

If the dimensions of this part are unchanged, then it ought to be possible to swap. This torsen module (Part No. 01L 409 751) is the same part used in the A8/S8 from 94 to 03 and A6/S6/RS6 from 98 to 05.
Thorburn
Would it be strong enough to cope with the extra torque though?
