NewNiceMrMe
I pulled off the A1 Soutbound at Washington Services this morning behind a silver Toyota Supra. It was one of the last models, the last shape released. Bolted onto the back of it was the largest exhaust I have ever seen. For a moment I thought I was at the Tyne Tunnel but the noise being emitted from the pipe made me click on to the fact it was actually the emissions outlet for this young mans pride and joy. The car was quite clean and well kept - not chavved up except for the silly exhaust. Anyway, I noticed the driver looking in his mirror a great deal...as we continued down the slip road, turning left as it goes...and then joining the road (dual carriageway) towards Washington Highway. Well he just had to didn't he. I heard the exhaust blip, the changedown, and off he went. Now normally I resist. But on this occasion I couldn't and he looked extremely embarassed as the torque of the 645....which I was driving to work for a change today....was at a perfect level to take off, coupled with the fact I'd already selected Sport-Sport-Manual....and whooooosh.....straight past him as he looked into his mirror with his exhaust screaming. However, credit to him....because the dual carriageway is short and ends at a roundabout...he was in the inside lane to turn left and I was in the outside lane to turn right as we stopped. He gave a toot on his horn and I expected a mouthful or sign of abuse only to note he'd put his window down and was beckoning me to do the same. Ok, here we go I thought. Aw well, always up for a bit of verbal with a chav I lowered my passenger side window.....to hear him shout "Oi mate, what the feck is in that? It sounded tops!" Hmm, caught me off guard that! So a quick thank you was in order and off we went...leaving him to ponder what the 645 on the boot lid meant....(surely that gives him an indication of what is in it???!!!). I enjoyed that. Made the 1hr and 45min....16 mile journey....worthwhile! Fecking traffic past the Metro Centre was HORRIFIC.

sayerbloke
The Supra is actually one car that you can get reasonable performance gains by sticking a big exhaust on. However, the fact he had to ask about your car probably indicates he isn't that big a petrol-head... Well played, Chris
NewNiceMrMe
Well I have to say I was very unimpressed with the way his car went. It seemed to get an initial spurt of decent acceleration and I thought "Eey up, ere' we go!"...but then once the revs counter on the 6 got above 3,000rpm it absolutely flew past him in a blink - and I know he was caning the Supra because his exhaust note was absolutely screaming at that point. The 6 can be very deceptive mind you, so perhaps I'm doing him a diservice by saying that.
sayerbloke
I think a large part is you underestimating your car The turbo'd Supra is pretty quick, but I think my car is faster than the N/A one.

NewNiceMrMe
I guess so, but they're not that small. Then again, I guess at speed, from another car when you're concentrating, yes it would probably be a bit much to expect.
garcon magnifique
It's always nice to be appreciated, innit. I remember when I had the 5 dr Impreza having a 100mph+ blast down the bypass with an ST220 Mondeo up me chuff, came to a roundabout and he gave me a flash and a friendly thumbs up as he pulled off. I get a few appreciative glances with the Legacy - though in the main that's because most people have no idea what it is, and certainly no clue that the old man's saloon that just passed them has a three litre flat six under the bonnet... activa
[ QUOTE ] but I think my car is faster than the N/A one. [/ QUOTE ] Good point! A lot of people think they're all turbos and quick, well they do look it! My friend used to have a N/A Auto Supra but with it's 18's and big pipe everyone thought it was a weapon. Until they overtook it without any trouble.
Soapsuds
yep - if it was a turbo, you would have heard the wail from both of them under the bonnet and you might have kept up, but not thrashed it past him!!
Rachel
There are a couple of turbo Supras and 2 red-hot Skyline R34 GTRs lurking around my part of the world... They kick the out of pretty much anything they want to, as they all have over 700hp to play with. Awesome sound from the Supra (2 x 5inch exhausts!). NewNiceMrMe
Well the conclusion must be it was a N/A model then. I'd suggest an Auto too - because I really did obliterate it and whilst the 6 isn't a slouch I wouldn't have expected to do that.

[/ QUOTE ] I've had a 'thumbs up' from a motor cyclist .... at least I think it was his thumb! This was after he followed me past some slower traffic on a single carriageway - doing a ton just before we entered the 40 zone!
craigyb
Having owned a twin turbo supra for 3 years, I can say, they are not slow, as a few of my jaunts to 165+ did prove. So it was probably a 24v Auto.
zchybrid
My friend had a n/a auto about 5 years back, it looked cool, but we took it to santa pod and it couldn't break into 15's needless to say it was quickly sold on for a Ferrari 348, quicker but oh-so unreliable... A standard suppra T.Turbo will pull a low 14 or high 13 second 1/4 mile.. .
