stevebower
Anyone any solutions for my 1997 Golf estate doors freezing? In winter I frequently have to get in through the tailgate, as the front doors locks are completely frozen - even if the locks are unlocked, the catch mechanism seems to freeze solid. I have tried WD40 on the visible parts, but it doesn't make a difference. Cheers Steve
dazr32
have you tried spraying the wd40 in the lock the night before mate or even a bit of masking tape just accross the lock barrel. if they fail i often find a can of butane with a match should do the trick . R32North
Get some thick car grease and smear on the locks and mech, also a smidge around the seals, this will prevent metal-on-metal freezing! Sounds like you park where the winds blows against the car at night forcing freezing air into teh gaps!
stevebower
I'll try the grease thing. We did try WD40 but it was no good. Yesterday the missus unlocked the door, but when she arrived at work it had frozen again, with her inside!, so it seems to be the inner mech. Does anyone else have this as a 'Golf' problem? Skidmark
Not a Golf problem with the present car,but has been with previous [various makes] ones. The advice 'Six' gives is good...it keeps the water out of the small joints in the mech and hence stops them freezing. There are aerosol greeses available now which may work without taking the door to bits. If the rubber door seal is freezing to the body and the door wont open, spray de-icer around the door and when the door is open spray the rubber with silicon anti squeek spray, which will make it anti-stick. cheers and keep warm
stevebower
Tried the aerosol lithium grease (the white stuff) from Halfords. Seems to work well, athough not had freezing nights since (how did it do that!). Seems more 'bulky' than WD40, so hopefully will keep the water out. Thanks for help
