noco68
Anyone know if the auto transmission is a limiting factor (over and above the manual) as to what I can up my power/torque to? Looking at my manual (eh, you know, the book ) it's indicating torque figures of 340nm for the manual but only 310 for the auto. Is it possible that the auto can't take as much extra grunt as the manual? Any insight, opinions - as always - appreciated. Edna'... (Just thinking, I guess I should post this on the tuning boards aswell...)
Edd_W
Yes, the auto box is not as strong as the manual 5 or 6 spd. The 6dps's have their issues but they are better that than the auto - not what you wanted to hear I guess? If you just accept that the auto box will probably die somewhere between 90 and 120k then you can go as much power as you can get. Engine reliability is then the issue. You can get a bit more life out of the auto box with a full fluid drain and filter renewal - you have to remove the sump to do this properly. Of course, there are many who know a lot more baout auto's than I because really I know nothing, it's all just guesswork.
noco68
Thanks for the response, Edd_W. Not really bad news, simplifies things for me really. I was 'humming' & 'hawing' about getting a little extra oomph so this news kinda' makes my mind up for me. I'll keep it clean and pure (and reasonably fast!) Thanks again, Edna'... cruiser647
Hi, your auto box is as reliable as the engine. No probs. Get the fluid and filter changed, and it'll easily live the same life as the engine. My old A8 4.2 had done 201K miles on the autobox (and if you look in the A8 forum, you'll see the A8 boxes seem to be troublesome unless the fluid and filter is changed every 40K miles). You thinking of going down the RS2 route to more power?????
noco68
Hi Cruiser647, When you say 'as reliable as the engine' you are taking into account power hikes, yes? Frankly, not completely au fait with the options available for this car. Don't want to go crazy but a subtle 300bhp sounds nice . Nothing's imminent anyway so I'll take my time considering the options... Edna'...
Edd_W
Have a look at the uR forums on www.audiworld.com - they have a lot more going on that there is here and maybe more info on reliability of boxes with modded engines.
noco68
Thanks Edd_W, Yes I've dipped into AudiWorld quite a bit - so much going on in there (so much 'terminology'!) that I find it hard to pinpoint exactly what I'm looking for..... Up at the tuning board the S2 forum was suggested to me and that looks to have good info. also. Am I correct in thinking the auto S6 wasn't released in the U.S? Strange, I know, but I think I picked that up from some of my trawls... Thanks again, Edna'...
