Heppubansan
Ok, all these cars are based on the MKV chassis, all weigh roughly the same (yes even the passat, due to aluminium components), and all use the same driveline/engine/transmission. Keeping the spec btw the 3 the same and with golf and a3 in 5dr form with DSG - the golf is 25k-ish and Audi is 26.5k-ish, passat comes as standard with DSG and sports suspension and is also 25k-ish. BUT on drivethedeal.com (and other brokers sites) you can get a 2k discount on both the a3 and the passat - making a3 1k cheaper than the Golf and the Passat 2k cheaper. What do you think? Im leaning towards the Passat - at about 22.5k thats a hell of a lot of car for the money, and its by far the cheapest to insure.... decisions... Mook
Depends what you want out of a car, as well as how much depreciation you're prepared to accept. The R32 will depreciate the least, followed by the A3, then the R32. They're all very different cars to drive and own.
silentandy
Even though they are on the same platform it doesn't necessarily mean they are all going to drive the same though does it?
Heppubansan
No, Im not saying that at all - I just thought it was an interesting comparison...
silentandy
Fair enough. If it's just down to figures then what you've quoted do seem good deals, but there will be a difference in depreciation for sure. You're unlikely to get any discount on an R32 for the forseeable future, but that also means residuals are going to be strong for a long time too. Are the specs similar on each of them? I'd personally go for the R.
Heppubansan
Ya the specs are exacty the same - I personally really like the idea of the R32, but it just seems like a lot of money for a Golf? If they made the GTI with 4motion and DSG that'd be my perfect car...
RedRobin
But isn't the GTI DSG with 4motion virtually a new R32? Okay, engine size and mpg is different, but....
silentandy
Could you imagine what it would do to R32 sales if the GTI had 4Mo! There's no technical reason why VW can't do that, it's just marketing reasons. Hopefully they'll do a GTI anniversary next year with it
RedRobin
Excellent point, Andy! What number anniversary would it be though? Have VW stuck in a 4Mo on an Anniversary Golf before?
R32Ash
Won't the next Anniversary GTI be due in 2007?
Mook
No Robin, the V6 4Mo was the first Golf to use the 4Motion system. Before that, you've got to hark back to the Mk2 Golf Syncro - remember that one..? 1.8 lump with as much thought about performance as a bag of lard in hot weather. Ideally, the Mk5 Anniversary GTI will be 500 limited run, 240 bhp 2.0 TFSI with 4Mo. Shouldn't kill R32 sales due to the limited run, but you never know with VW... Heppubansan
Im really starting to like the R32, but it just seems so expensive... Anyone know what insurace group it is? A BMW 130 is group 17 so Im guessing the same as that???
Mook
Same as the Mk4 R32. I can't remember what that is either - probably group 17 or 18. I wanted one, so I bought one and thought about the insurance later...
Bungle
The brochure says its group 18.
