phantom75
i have done 2500 kms up to today ,it is nearly impossible to drive my GTI in a civilised way, i cannot resist benifiting from it's full engine power most of the time, can anybody advise if this is dangerous and may hurt the engine on long terms? is the engine equiped for this? the RPM is always on the higher side and almost reaching the red area between every gear, whoever is driving this car may understand what im talking about, so any threats on damaging the engine because of this????? RedRobin
In my opinion you will not be damaging your engine. This is especially true for the DSG modes where engine management protects against over revving. This car is designed for hard driving (as well as gentle driving). It's more important that you look after the fluid levels and tyres.
Neimad
Agreed, Red. So long as you keep sufficient oil in the car and a decent amount of tread on your tyres it shouldn't cause too much damage, although it may accelerate your service schedule somewhat (the oil will become contaminated quicker), and it may need more components replacing in 8-10 years than a more gentlly driven car. Even non-DSG cars shouldn't suffer excessive damaged by reving the engine too high as all cars have rev limiters these days specifically designed to stop people reving the engine "to death". DSG-equipt cars have the edge though as the transmission will generally try to shift up before it hits the redline.
phantom75
well thanks, this really reliefed me, u know i everyday put my ear near the engine to see if any new strange sound is there although i beleive when idle, the sound of engine is a little bit noisy, not smooth
silentandy
As long as you are waiting for the engine to come up to full temperature before driving like that then it should be ok. I generally keep under 3k until the temp is up. Afterall it wasn't made to dawdle around town at 20mph
Simonl
the GTI's are put through very rigorous engine testing a the factory anyway, way before you get it.
RedRobin
Andy's point about temperature is very important - I forgot that! No longer necessary to idle for a few minutes before switching off ignition for the sake of the turbo as in older cars. The unexpectedly rough sound on first starting or idling is normal. If you find the engine generally too quiet as a driving aid then consider a Milltek exhaust which will boost performance as well.

[/ QUOTE ] I read an article on the Veyron somewhere that said it had to undergo the same bench testing as every other VAG engine - 3 weeks solid flat out! R32North
Beware tho, the other VW components won't last too long if you drive hard, plus variable servicing will come up sooner than you think.
RedRobin
I think it would be very difficult to drive hard all the time though. Something I really enjoy about the GTI is how the engine seems equally happy just cruising or pootling or going for it.
