calumcousins
Well, was just driving home tonight, on a stretch of dual carrageway in 6th gear doing about 50mph. Went to overtake another car and put my foot down, and.... revs started to rise as normal, hit about 2,500rpm and then shot up to about 3,200... At first i thought it might be a bit slippery outside but some later exuberant cornering proved that it wasnt that, and could get it to do the same thing again in any gear pretty much. So my thinking is that its the clutch. Has anyone else had theirs go? I find it really strange that in this day and age a clutch on a £24k+ car can only last 38,000 miles/3 years. Should this be a warranty job do you think? Calum.
R32Ash
I think you'll be very lucky to get a clutch out of VW under warranty. I'd expect it to be an expensive job too unfortunately. By expensive I mean circa £1k including fitting - if TT's etc are anything to go by.

Markallain
I'd try to get it under warranty. My mate got his clutch on his 172 Cup done under warranty.

It's just that I know of several TTs eating their clutches quite early, and the 'box is similar - if not the clutch - so I'd expect it to be a similar job. Maybe try a specialist instead of your stealer though? I know JBS of Chesterfield (for example) do uprated clutches fitted for less than a standard job at VW. Mook
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I would be very, very surprised if you managed to get this under warranty, esp as the car has covered 38K miles. If you read your warranty T's and C's, you'll find that the clutch friction plate is not covered. It's always worth asking though! If it's not warranty, you could always get it done to the same standards by a local VW specialist - removing the gearbox on the R32 is no more difficult than on the V6 4Motion. calumcousins
hmm...yeh. well its going in for a service and some warranty work anyway on tuesday, so i'll try and twist their arm on the phone tomorrow. Out of interest though, how long should an R32 clutch last do you think? I wouldnt mind so much if i regularly took it on a track or ragged it all the time, but I dont! My first set of tyres lasted me 30,000 miles for gods sake, I drive like an old woman!
jimmyp
It could well be your dual mass flywheel as they do tend to come "loose" on R's and yes it is a warrenty job. I've just recently had mine replaced and takes about two days to renew.
Mook
It all depends on the type of driving it's done. My A4 1.8T Sport had done over 180K miles when I sold it, all on the original clutch, but it was 95% motorway miles. You may drive like an old woman (your words, not mine ), but what type of driving do you do? Do you live in a city and pootle around, or is it all motorway driving? It may not be the clutch, it could be the flywheel seal, which has lead to oil leaking from the engine and contaminating the clutch plate - you never know. Best of luck with your arm twisting tomorrow
