2000 mk4 1.8T 100k miles.

I started the car this morning and as usual it started first time. Put car in gear started to revers and it stalls. thought it was me just being a prat so started it again and again it starts first time. Try to revers again and this time it starts to judder as if its going to stall. so put my foot on the gas a bit more and nothing no extra revs. lights were on and were fading on and off until again it stalls. Went through this procedure three times till it finally wanted to go. managed to get to the end of my road were when i tried to pull away it just wanted to die again. could it be the alternater or the battery or is it something to do with the auto choke that i should just let it warm up a bit more befor starting on my way? need real help quick as i am doing lots of driving this xmas

Bad news mate, sounds like it's in limp home mode, will sound as rough as hell and the turbo will be out of action. Probably reasons are one or more of the coil packs or the MAF has given up the ghost. Both easy diy fixes so don't panic just yet. My bet is it's the coil pack as its quite sudden and dramatic.

Good luck with it 169144-ok.gif

Not always, i was running on four packs at one time and the car still seemed fine to drive, but it only had a lose of power once i think, the only way of knowing is to get it to the stealers for a check. frown.gif Hope it's nothing serious. 169144-ok.gif

Lights as in the dash lights, front lights or what lights?

Did you have to jump start it at the end of the road? It sounds like it turning over fast enough, so cant be a chargnig or battery fault. Does a faulty coil pack make the lights fade?
