Happy christmas to everyone!!!! grin.gif

The rear wiper on my 2001 Passat estate has developed a mind of its own over the last 2 days. It suddenly starts wiping the screen of its own accord and with the switch off! Are there any seperate electronics/ relays etc that control this? OR is it the comfort control unit? Could be the stalk (expensive item!)?

Thanks in advance 169144-ok.gif

Thats the motor in there, thought the electronics that operate it would be somewhere else. I will get the door card off and have a look.

Thats after i have fitted my new sexy headlights we discussed earlier. They have arrived from Germany, just need to put the bulbs in and swap over the height adjustment motor smile.gif . Then take all the spoiler off and a load of trim just to fit them frown.gif

You'll probably find its the actual wiper motor in the boot. I have come across a few before.

Does your rear washer work ? If it does, does it work properly with adequate strength? If not this suggests that your washer pipe is leaking in your boot(common problem) and has soaked the wiper motor. you will need a new wiper motor and a simple modification to the washer pipe.

but i would honestly say definatly go for a wiper motor whatever the rear washer is doing.

Thanks, the washer seems to work fine. In fact the wiper works fine.

It seems to have a mind of its own, starts wiping, carrys on for about 10-20 mins then just stops smile.gif

Am waiting for our Mulkbear to come on, it'll be a common problem on VW! Always the case with VW grin.gif

Never had a problem with a rear wiper on a Pasaat estate, but i would say it is the wiper stalk, as i have this fault on a golf estate and it was the stalk. 169144-ok.gif

the lupo doesnt really suffer from any common faults thinking about it....but then theres not much to go wrong on them laugh.gif

Strange that there is no common faults on the Lupos expect Pedal boxes and Burning out Exhaust valves.

Had this problem on my 1990 estate - and it was the switch unit, so it may be the same on the more recent model. Took it to bits (drilled out the rivets) and found the spring contact weak, and the copper connection wobbly and worn (sorry - I'm suffering too much from the NY celebrations to dream up a more technical description). Got a replacement unit from the scrappy, fitted in 10 minutes - problem solved.

The switch unit on my ancient Passat is the bit the wiper stalk fits into, inside the steering column shroud, under the steering wheel - probably the same on yours. When I asked my scrappy for the replacement, he said I was lucky he had one on a recent arrival - the VW electrics are among the first things to be cannibalised off scrapped cars, he said, so I imagine it's a fairly common problem. Passats are not that common down here in the south of France, so sometimes I have to "book" a replacement part in advance off the next one scrapped. What you might do if you have to wait for a unit to come in is to temporarily divert the rear wiper wire to a supplementary switch in a spare way on the dash, but if it's only a mild inconvenience, I'd be tempted to live with it, or just disconnect at the motor end.
