s3geezer
Hi, I'm new to this site after just buying a black 2000 Audi S3 in November. Holy moly, how lovely are these cars!!! Just wondered - I get a slight whiff of fuel through the vents sometimes when I've been driving and then come to a standstill (traffic lights for example) and have to stop. it's only slight but I've only noticed since I started to fill it with Optimax. This fuel stinks and I haven't noticed any difference in performance from Sainsbury's Super Unleaded. Anyhoo - to cut a long story short if I lift the bonnet up when I get home and take a good sniff with my nose proper buried in the bonnet where the carbon filter is (between screenwash and coolant) it does smell of fuel. If I turn the blower off inside the car I don't smell a thing inside when driving. Is it a case of going back to the other fuel and perhaps blocking my drivers vent off by my side window or is it about to blow up? I took it to the stealer who confirmed there were no leaks anywhere and that they tightened up a few pipes. The smell is much less but I do get a slight whiff inside the cabin every now and again. Is this normal?
Mo-S3
The carbonfilter is there to remove excess petrol vapour but you should never beable to smell petrol from around the engine bay or from with in the car. Suggest you get an independant specialist to have a look around the engine in case there are any perished hoses or similar.
s3geezer
Is it a simple case of replacing the carbon filter or is this some kind of big job...? Anyone else ever had this prob? It's only done 45k miles!
Mo-S3
No point in replacing the charcoal cannister if its not faulty. Even so it is easy enough to replace.
s3geezer
Yeah you're right - I've done some research. Well I know the exact area it is soming from . It's not a strong smell but its there and it annoys me. i just put on the recirculation when I get into the centre of town so i don't get a whiff of it. It MUST be a hose or something - what about the fuel filter could that be it....? Or is that in a different area altogether? I'm cludeless with the S3 engine bay - why is there no Haynes manual for it!!!
Mo-S3
The fuel filter is locted under the car near the rear. You can buy a haynes manual for the A3 model but i dont think it covers the S3. Check the hoses like you said.
s3geezer
Well it's not the fuel filter then. This is the area of the engine bay that smells petroly.... (hope this link works.....)
s3geezer
What thing is inside that red circle?? It has lots of hosey things. Any particular fiel related thing worth checking apart from all the hoses? The carbon filter works, it ticks away as usual on tickover but if you put your nose right in the area where the red circle is in the above picture it smells of fuel and sometimes when I stop and the engine idles fuel whiffs come throught the venting system. Independent garage going to have a look for me tomorrow so I'll let you know the results.
s3geezer
Well they said no leaks found either but when they fixed my water pump last week, they said a bit of fuel had got spilt in the engine bay (sounds complete bollox if you ask me) so they steam cleaned the engine bay to get rid of it. Just went to Bournemouth and back and I didn't notice the smell when we stopped etc in traffic. M'eh......must be one of those mysteries of life (unless what the garage told me is true...)
