mu71rd
hello all. I am getting ready to wash my car for the first time since it arrived! (that'll be about 2 months ). However, I have armed myself with some Meguiars NXT car wash shampoo and wax, and a lambswool mit. As you can probably tell, I'm not wanting to be too anal about it, but it certainly does need a clean. Can anyone answer a few questions for me? I have read the 'how to wash your car properly' sticky at the top of the cleaning section, so am cool with that bit. The bit I know nothing about is waxing. So... 1) does the car have to be totally dry before starting on the wax, and if so, what should I use? 2) how much wax is 'a small amount'? I have a circular foam pad to use. Is a pea-sized amount small, and how much area will that cover? 3) once it goes hazy (?!), what would be a suitable thing to rub it off with, and how do i know when to stop?! as you can see - quite basic questions. I've never done this before - apologies!
drpellypo
Point 1, 2, and er in fact, 3 are all very subjective to the kind of wax you use. There are a massive array of waxes out there, ranging from synthetic, to paste, from budget to wetting yourself expensive. You've got a black car, yes? If so paint protection is a must. Have you bought some wax already, or are you planning to buy some? If the answer is yes to the latter, how much are you willing to spend?
mu71rd
Hi drpellypo. I've got the Meguirs NXT as above - is that what you mean by paint protection, or are you referring to something along the Supagard line? I don't really want to spend hundreds on it, so was hoping waxing it myself might be enough. living in South London with street parking, I would rather save my hundreds, have a slightly dirtier car and buy some extra security devices to prevent it being nicked! drpellypo
Paint protection in the sense of what I'm getting at is sealent and wax. I've just spent £40 on a tub of wax, but it will last me for years, so not that much really. Pinnacle Souveran was my choice, and it's highly recommended for dark coloured cars. drpellypo
Yes, yes you shall. Although I will have just driven 300 and odd miles back from Hereford the night before, so it might be sparkling underneath, but mucky on top.
