Tobes49
Can someone help me on this one, We have 3 computers, call them 1,2,3 1,2 are Xp home and hard wired to a Netgear 834G router/ADSL modem, Number 3 is windows 98 and through a wireless connection, The problem is number 2 wont share files/print to the network, the internet connection works fine and the router sees the computer, but 1,3 wont commincate with it. Any idea what to check. they are all on the same workgroup.
mb
Whenever I have had this problem it has usually been down to a firewall setting, usually 3rd party that has crept in there somewhere. Try to see if you can move files from it as they usually only block incoming traffic
CarMad
Are the firewall settings different ? Have had similar and I just had the security set higher on Zonealarms on one than the other. Oh and check that something like Zonealarms is allowing the IP addresses to communicate within the zone you should have set.
Tobes49
It running norton internet security 2006, I have selected in the firewall and intrusion provention to allow the IP address between the range we use. Is there another setting I'm missing. I've got to say i think the problem started when I installed Norton but not sure. Forgot to say norton is only installed on the XP computers. Tobes49
I've uninstalled Norton on both the Xp computers and now the network is fine again. Cheers for the help, When I reinstall Norton internet security is there a setting that I should change to stop this happening?
CarMad
Haven't used Norton. But you might need to create a zone that includes all the IP addresses on your local network, and or don't put the firewall to maximum for the local network, but make sure that it is for the internet. Or use Zonealarms... as its free and just about the best thats out there.

mb
Not sure about Norton but there should be a "trusted network adaptor" or somesuch setting - had same issue with F-Secure
Si_GTi
Norton Internet Security has a Network Wizard function that will auto-detect your network and then allow file and print sharing based on the information it detects. Had to do this with a client of ours who bought a laptop from PC World and then wondered why it couldn't share files despite the fact that the Internet would connect OK. Sounds like a similar issue. I think the Network Wizard is in the options for the Firewall?

Tobes49
I tried the wizard and made trusted zones for the IP address that we used and this still didn't cure the problem. I'll try reinstalling Norton this weekend and see how I get on. Cheers for all you help
