mb
Hi - I am about to comission a new server - it will run 2003 Server & SQL 2000/2005 as well as file sharing & running a domain of less than 10 users. I have a twin Athlon MP box (1.67 GHz) do you think this is worth going with or is a newer P4 box going to deliver a lot more performance for not a lot of money ? Thorburn
If you are looking for a cheap SMP box then the Pentium D 920 is pretty nice in my opinion, cheapest dual core x86 CPU you can buy (other than the out-going 820). Combined with a fairly basic 945G based motherboard and you will have a quick, very stable system.
sitas3
is the sql server the only one or is this running across servers? If mission-critical, what about clustering/failover support?
Hopsta
Why not leave the DC on the Athlon and purchase a good P4 system for SQL, Spread the load a bit
mb
Thanks for the advice Re Failure - usually have a 2nd system with identical set up that can be fired up if a major failure, use RAID + back up to NAS device for a restore. There would be some downtime but not excessive (hopefully !) Re 2 boxes - could be a good plan hadn't thought of that due to management etc. but one could do PDC & file server & the other the SQL would also provide some failure protection as either could be temporarily pressed into action to do both roles. Was looking at one on overclockers.co.uk and it says 955/975 only?
Hopsta
I generally like to have the DC on a server that has it as its' only role. Not entriely needed by design so the File/print server idea could still be used.

[/ QUOTE ] 945G/P is definately dual core compatible Overclockers are wrong, the 945 chipset supports all 9xx series CPUs (EXCEPT] Extreme Editions, the 840EE and 955EE, these can only be used in 955 or 975 motherboards), I run a 950 in a 945G based Shuttle
