rentaghost
Hopped into the s3 today after 5 or so days away. Car making a dull cyclical grinding noise whilst moving, worse on braking. Couldn't tell which corner it was coming from, as only drove about 200 yards obviously. Nothing obvious hanging off and tyres all ok. Car still under warranty, full AVS, still on original pads, so wandered if could be worn out pads (? no warning light). Don't really want to drive car until I have some idea what's going on so may call Audi assist tomorrow - but equally if something simple like pads don't want to be fleeced by the stealers Help - what should I do ?? (Have looked at pads and can't tell if worn or not Thanks for any advice Tom
Wallachie
Don't worry, that happens if the car sits for a while on worn pads/discs; mine does the same thing. Take it for a spin and do some heavy braking and it will soon free up!
sitas3
I had a grinding noise coming the front of my car last week - turned out to be a branch caught under the car!
s3geezer
Yeah - If I wash the car and leave it a while the next time I use the brakes on the car it feels and sounds a bit grindy and funny but clears up after a few sharp brake manouvers. Give it a go on a quiet road near your home if you like. If it still does it perhaps calling Audi woudn't be such a bad idea...?

rentaghost
The wife called Audi Assist this morning and they told her they were sending a tow truck to pick it up. It's now at Audi and they say it needs pads / discs all round and quoted for this. I suggested I pick the car up and take it for some alternative quotes - at which point the guy became a little abrupt and said it wasn't safe to drive and I'd take it at my own risk, and that they'd charge me £80 for the inspection. So really I felt I had little option but to leave it with them. Can't help feeling I've been had a little bit ???

khufu
What a crock! yup, it will just have been surface rust on the discs! If it is a facelift S3 it will have had wear sensors!!!! Tell them them you will ask them to show you the disc/pads that they changed afterwards. Also ask them how they can charge £80 to look through the wheels to see this. I personally would go round and (with my spare keys if need be)just take the car away and tell them to BOLT!
rentaghost
Yeah I know I should give it to them but I just don't need the stress at the moment. I must say I am beginning to get fed up with Audi's aftersales attitute - to the extend that I would not buy an Audi again which is terribly sad. Out of interest - should my car have wear sensors ?? (It's a 03 S3). If so then then perhaps they've failed ? Oh but hang on silly me Audi will just say the pads were within limits but the discs were worn ! Wallachie
Your car will have wear sensors, but they do fail sometimes. I had all my pads changed before Xmas, and one of the pads was almost on the metal, and had almost cut through the sensor wire but never set the sensor off! ChriS3
Discs don't suddenly go like that, you should have noticed the noise before if it's anything to worry about. It's perfectly normal to get the noise from the surface rusting on the discs, a few jabs of the brake pedal sorts it out no probs. Even if there is a problem, do you really think that all of your discs and pads have suddenly gone all at once? Highly unlikely. I've had my local stealer tell me all sorts of porkies. Best one yet has to be the 'cracked' anti-roll bar. If the dealer is trying to charge you for something that you didn't agree to, then take it to trading standards. Audi UK aftersales is terrible, it's putting me off the new S3 before I've even seen it. You have the right to a second opinion, Kwik Fit do brake inspections for free. If you have an 03 S3, then you have the facelift model with the wear sensors.
