Scotty
A problems that exists only on cold mornings? You need to print this off and stick it under your dealers nose. I did and it was resolved without issue. HERE

Does this fix maybe fix the issue I have?
Scotty
There's a couple of start up noises. The main one is the chain tightening. This takes a couple of seconds and it can be a little lumpy during that time. Not sure about the fan unless the noise sounds like a slipping belt in which case the TSB will help. Soapsuds
i remember my old Golf GTi 8v many moons ago (Mk2) that used to click like crazy for about 5 seconds whilst the hydraulic lifers filled with oil!!! Very scary sound

umbongo
Scotty - which noise does the bulletin resolve ? Mine whines loudly for a couple of mins on startup, goes away completely after that - figured it was just warming itself up. Booked in for a service at the end of the month so will push them for all updates. cheers
Scotty
Umbongo - it's the whine problem. It's very specific and only happens on cool/cold mornings.
hashluck
Ditto what Scotty says. Had the whine on mine and had them do the bulletin and all was well. Prior to that the dealer though it might be connected to another bulletin they had to do with the inlet manifold which they though a software update would cure. They did the update anyway but it was not that. Whatever, do not let them fob you off
umbongo
Thanks Scotty/Hashluck - called my dealer to add it to the actions on my upcoming service - they have gone away to think about it as they didn't recognise the bulletin when I read it to them and they are concerned that it might be a big job etc etc Basically if they can get the parts in advance I'm hoping it'll slip in with my existing service booking. Otherwise I'll be down there at the weekend with a print out to hand around. Do you remember if it took long for them to do it on your cars ? Scotty
I think it is a big job. They probably don't recognise it as that TSB is from the US. I think my car was in overnight.
lmmlmmam
I have failed to get my dealer to do this mod. There's a slight problem as the TSB is not applicable to the engine code of most UK S4's. However the description is exactly like the problem Scotty and Hashluck have experienced and the TSB has fixed it for them. Haven't the time or energy to make a fuss to get it done.
