daveknott
Anyone driven one of these yet? If so, what are your thoughts? Is it really as good as a Golf GTI? Could a Golf GTI driver really be tempted into a chavvy Ford?
Paul
not driven one, but they look reasonable with a nice engine. Just watch the paint match on the bumpers to body, they are having "issues"
simkna
I have driven a couple... What can I say, it really is an excellent car. Great engine, great noise, great handling. Feels just as solid and "Germanic" as my A4. Has more character than a GTI TBH. Must admit... I'm having a hard time deciding between ST and GTi myself. One downside is that MPG seems dire according to many ST forums, whereas GTi MPG is not too bad. Take one for a drive, you'll likely be impressed. Si. daveknott
I'm taking one for a drive on Sat. Will let you know what I think. MPG does seem pretty bad - similar or worse than a 3.0 six it looks like!
MattR32
VW seemed to have managed some decent fuel efficiency with their FSI engines. Handy.
chazzy
My best mate has just put an order down for an ST, he was torn between it and the GTi, i think he decided the ST was less "chuckable" but more raucous? he loved the engine and the winning aspect was the price, not much discouont from the brokers or importers for the GTi, much better on the ST. Residuals???? wo can tell, will be worse than Gti for sure, but hopefully better than an 1.6LX! chas

[/ QUOTE ] I'd second simkna's thoughts, I was impressed, more so than the GTi. Torque steer is almost non existent too. Boost comes in nice and low, the car feels nicely planted and the build quality was good imo. But then I got back into the R32, which is when it dawned on me what a great car it is. MattR32
Seen two in the last 24 hours - I'm very tempted. Lovely sound when being pushed hard.
theduisbergkid
Its all about the engine. Volvo T5 engine in a chavvy hatchback. Interesting combo. For me, I'll wait for the Volvo hatchback with the same engine ("c30"??), but hopefully the 'R' typewith 300 bhp and a MUCH nicer interior than the cheapo Ford. (OK, OK, each to their own...) MattR32
Testing one tomorrow at 10. The dealer was all over me like a rash - Almost new car, had an R32 before, etc! Had a good look around one - The Astra actually looks more solid. Focus had a bit too much shiny plastic for me (all matt coloured in the Astra) and Fisher Price controls but I'm looking forward to a drive. Failed the "door clunk" test too - A wee but tinny. Asthray has an Audi like clunk.
scheemy
I have the S40 with the ST engine and it does go well but it doesnt handle aswell as the ST. The Volvo might be good in a crash but it does make them heavy which is where it loses out. Awesome sound from the 5 cylinder engine!!!!
