1monty
A friend of ours has just been stranded on the side of the road for ages with a faulty coil pack (not an R32). AA man said these always fail on VW and suggested every VW carry a spare. What are peoples experiences with coil packs on the R? Do they fail very often? Are you guys carrying spares around? Couldn't find any info. on search.
bazza_g
From what I remember the infamous coil pack problems were a nightmare on the VAG 1.8T unit found on everything from Golfs to Leons to A6's. They got redesigned a while ago as I had all my Leon Cupra's replaced and had no problems from that point on. To be honest, I didn't realise the R32 had coilpacks - had no problems myself in the time I had my R32
jimmyp
[ QUOTE ] What are peoples experiences with coil packs on the R? I have had.....wait for it.............9 of the feckers, but luckily have had a whole new set a while ago and all seems ok so far. Thay are known to be be quite weak. flux
As bazza says, they were a major problem on all the VAG 1.8T cars (and that engine was in a LOT of different models), such that they ran out for a long period, and the only way to keep cars on the road was the dealers taking them out of showroom cars etc. They brought in a new design a couple of years ago, and I don't think there have been any problems since then. I had one go on mine (1.8T), and they just replaced all 4, no question. Been fine since then. As for the VAG 3.2 N/A engine, I haven't heard of any problems, but if they use the same coilpacks as the 1.8T (no idea if they do) then I guess they could also suffer (as I would guess the last R32 was made before the new coilpack's came out). Mollox
Mine weren't The 'friendly' specialist did them all as well as 4 spark plugs (why??) without even asking me I too had 4 hours stranded at the side of the road in freezing conditions after I pointed out to the AA that you can't tow a VAG awd cars. Then they failed to order the flatbed as promised, so every sympathy from me - pesky, bloody coilpacks

mb
Yep - and the new A3/S3 etc. A4 & upwards is "real" AWD - with the associated idiosyncracies such as non towing, matching tyres etc.
Golfgirl
[ QUOTE ] Hi Claire, How much did that cost you? [/ QUOTE ] Like Jimmy said, it was done under warranty. The new packs have a 5 year warranty too so if they go again in the next 5 years I should be ok
