s3geezer
Quick question - my S3 has the standard 17" Avus wheels but they are not in the best of condition. It will cost me 200 GBP to get them refurbed at our local wheel shop or I have seen replica RS4 alloys on the internet with proper Audi centre caps. They look fantastic and I'd love to put them on my S3 but will I need to lower the car to make them look good or can i just bolt them on with profile 40 tyres and they would look good. I don't want my S3 to look like it's on stilts! Does 1 inch make a difference to handling, looks etc is what I'm asking. cheers guys.
Wallachie
You don't need to lower your car mate, they will fit on fine. Tyres = 225 40 18" Car won't look like its on stilts, although lowering it slightly will make it look better. Check out my gallery, my old S3 had standard Avus wheels and my current one has the 18" RSTT's. http://www.tyresmoke.net/gallery/albut43
Paul
later S3's got the option of 18" RSTT wheels anyway so they will go straight on. Ive had one S3 with them with standard suspension and this one with them and Quattro GmbH uprated and lowered suspension.
s3geezer
How much is it advisable to get the car lowered onto the 18" inchers then (10/20 mm) and what make of springs are respectable. i am not a rude boy and I want to keep my sexy S3 as standard as possible but I can't resist those wheels and I want them to look as good as possible. Paul - what is Quattro gmbh suspension?? Is that factory option or aftermarket accessory?
Paul
factory option, that the Audi UK eventually decided to drop from the options list for some reason. It was still available from Germany till the end of production. Its was sold as Quattro GmbH lowered and uprated suspension, and dropped the car approx 20mm
Wallachie
Paul - post a couple of pics of your car in this thread please, I would like to see how it looks lowered. Thanks
s3geezer
Yes, please do. Mills - is yours lowered or standard suspension? I've seen replica new ones for about 280 GBP with Audi centre caps and no tyres. Does that price sound about right and is there any noticable difference between the Audi version and the replica? ChriS3
£280 should be about right. I paid £500 for fake ones with tyres, but they come with the chrome centres (bit naff). I'd avoid getting the wheel/tyre package as the tyres are utter crap. You'll be buying new tyres either way. I've dropped mine by 30mm with an Eibach Pro-Street S set-up. I could go lower but IMHO the slammed look isn't for me.
s3geezer
The ones I've seen have the Audi caps which is good. Yours doesn't look too lowered, it looks just right - that's the sort of look I want. How much are you looking at for the new suspension setup and parts roughly? ChriS3
Unfortunately, that was a pic before I changed out the suspension. That's how it'll look with the standard set-up. Just too lazy to get some new pics up - should get around to it in the next few weeks. If you do lower your S3, it can change the camber on the rear wheels to about -2°. It can make the wheels look like they've been sucked in, so spacers help a lot. Adjustable tie-bars would take out the camber, and save on tyre wear, but I like the handling just the way it is. Paul
Please be aware that car is running Porsche Brakes + 10mm spacers on front, and 15mm spacers on the rear, so it does beef the cars stance up a bit and push the wheels out in the arches. A few in here.
ChriS3
S3_Geezer - I paid about £725 for the Eibach suspension, plus fitting. Not cheap, but definately worth every penny. Spacers were about £115 (I think), and I had to buy extra long bolts (£30)
s3geezer
Cool - cheers guys. Thanks for all the info and pics. Real aluminium mirrors are also on my wish list. This car is going to keep me so poor but every time I put my foot down I get the biggest grin EVER on my face!

Paul
indeed. I feel a delta squadron S3 formation coming on.
Mo-S3
Whether you want to get your car lowered for cosmetic reasons or handling reasons is up to you but the latter will make a massive difference to the handling of the S3. Personally i feel that the S3 standard suspension is too soft for a good handling car. You need to use a coilover setup if you can afford it or even just a good set of springs with matched dampers. ChriS3
heh heh heh, S3_Geezer, you're going to be poor but happy. If you go for a nice expensive sussy kit, you can retain the ride quality i.e. not too harsh, but the handling is sooo good
