encee
What phrase is it that RedRobin uses............a worm in my brain, that`s it, and yes, I have one regarding my alloys. Ever since I bought my (used) Mk V GTI, I`ve been wanting the 18` alloys, instead of the 17` that are on mine. Anyway, I`ve now got the chance of buying the GTI Monza II 18`s, or some 19` BBS alloys, both for the same price (if tyres are included). So......what do you think ??? The 18`s, or the 19`s, or will they just look too "bling" (19`s I mean) ? Any help greatly appreciated. I haven`t included pics, BTW, as I just want to know opinions without seeing the alloys. Cheers.
TwoSheds
Encee... its got to depend on what these 19's look like it , could well make the car look 'bling'. There have been some posts in the recent past where tunners had 19's fitted as part of their demo cars perhaps somebody can remember which firms they were ? stevie_d
I love the 18" Monzas, so would go for them, but then it would look like every other GTI out there, so I'd then go for the BBS on second thoughs. However, it is the Monzas that give the GTI its identity, so I'd probably stick with them...but then most 19" BBS alloys look great, so I may go for...oh I don't know. Basically it depends; if you want to keep the GTI-ness then get the 18" monzas, however it will look like every other GTI and won't look a "lot" different to your current set. So if you want to stand out a litte more then go for the 19"s. Oh, and I don't think they'll look too blind tbh, although they will obviously affect the ride. encee
Thanks for the replies gents. Steve: As you say, it would be nice to keep the "GTI-ness", which the 18`s will do, but also nice to look more original. I believe that BBS make the Monza alloys anyway, and if they were any other make than BBS, I wouldn`t even consider them at all, as I think that to remain with BBS, which are usually associated with the GTI, is the only way to go (not knocking anyone else`s alloy-choices here BTW, as it`s just my opinion )
stevie_d
true, I think most VW alloys are made by BBS? As I've said, matter of opinion; Keep the GTI-ness - go for 18" Monzas Be more original - go the the 19" BBS Either way it'll look smart
RedRobin
The BBS 19s are a classic design and suit the GTI quite well. However, as stevie says, the original GTI alloys (both 17s and 18s) are also made by BBS and feature a new 'hollow' technology. Their design also is exceptionally easy to clean - Quite a practical consideration. Personally, though it's a mod you can't see (unless you can register 5mm lowering!), I would recommend upgrading the suspension before the alloys. But, each to their own. nutkins
IMO, you just have to get the 18"'s. The 19's are nice also, but the Monza's make the GTI. And you don't see that smoked two tone design on many cars.

encee
Red, thanks very much for the pics mate. The black one at the bottom (as you`re aware ) is exactly the one that I`ve been looking at today, at Awesome GTI. Mine will look exactly the same as that one (even though that one is lowered about 15mm due to the Koni`s etc) I`ve been trying to find a pic of this all night, and you`ve just done it for me. Cheers mate, you`re a gent ! PS: What size are on the blue one ? (Can`t quite zoom in enough to see).

Steve, you`re first mod MUST be an APR re-map, done at Awesome GTI. It really is fantastic, and will transform your GTI (not that they`re exactly slow anyway ) Cue Red now for the Koni FSD`s, and Eibach springs ! , and guess what, he`d be right as well ! Not as well qualified as Red on this score, as he`s got the suspension mods and I`ve not, but I`ve driven one with them on (Awesome GTI again ), and they really are excellent in both road-holding, AND retaining comfort. Take your pick Steve !
petsy
very tasty but you'll have to be extremely careful with sleeping policemen looking at the height of front spoiler of that black one.

(Hope I`m not trying to teach you to suck eggs mate; you may be a tuning "God" for all I know, something I`m certainly not ) Anyway, enjoy the new GTI when it arrives, they really are that good ! stevie_d
tuning god? hardly mate, my TDI (MKIV) has been well fettled and I know the lingo, but ask my wtf most of it means and I'll curl up into a ball and start crying. I can't wait for the GTI, tbh, I think it is the most complete car on the road today. Of course, other car owners may disagree, but we know we're right I really like thos 19" BBS wheels, look lovely! Just a shame that the GTI oem wheels are stunning too, big decision mate.

If I get the 18`s, it will always be well-recognised as a GTI (no bad thing at all), but the 19`s look more original. I must admit, I`m not one for changing alloys on my cars all the time, but I do think the wheels make a car (looks-wise anyway), and that`s why I`ve been wanting the 18`s so much, but then the BBS 19`s just sort of came along as well, so I just don`t know. Anyway, keep those opinions coming please.............
Ballistic
Those 19" wheels look identical to M3 CSL wheels which take ages to clean and it's very difficult to get to the insides of them. As has already been commented the 18" Monza look easy to clean. May or may not be an important consideration for you.

Yes, it is an important consideration for me, so it`s a good point that you raise. I`m starting to lean toward the 18`s, as, when it does come time to sell (and it always does in the end ), it will probably be more saleable, to a dealer anyway, with the GTI style alloys on it........................but then again, I still don`t know.............. encee
Thanks to all who have replied; it is greatly appreciated. Could you just have on more look, as I`ve now Photoshopped (roughly) both sets of alloys onto my own car, and again, give your preference if you don`t mind. Simonl
OEM!!!!!!!!! Much much cooler, the ones the car was designed for. They're a work of art. You see those BBS everywhere!
TP27
I had BBS CH's on my old R. At 8.5J compared to the stock 7.5J they are brilliant on the open road but I only had them on for the Summer months. My own personal thought is that as they are a discontinued BBS rim, maybe more Mk4 than MkV ?? TP.
dazdot
On that car, i can't see why anyone would choose the BBS over the OEM! I seriously think VW couldn't have picked a nicer wheel for the GTI.
