Jools
Just had a recall from Audi for my Michelin tyres, received 5 new tyres F.O.C.
bigtone
I am curious to know why they were recalled? Michelin is one brand I will never drive on my cars, in fact if I have had new cars with them fitted as OE, I have always had them changed for another brand. I am old enough to remember X and ZX tyres which were one of the best pieces of spoof marketing ever done by a major corporate. Michelin have always designed their patterns and compounds for high mileage rather than grip, which has never suited me. In those days of the tyres mentioned above, one only had to look at the tyres fitted on the worst wrecks in any scrapyard.
johnss8
How old were your tyres? any idea why? and were they 1's or the latest 2's? sorry for the questions. This is the 1st time i've had Michellins and i must admit i'm quite impressed even when i had to replace 1 last year after a rather large pot hole the tyre dealer who i've been using for years and have bought many Yokohama's off him recommended the Mich's even though i was going to change all 4 tyres. Interested now in the answers
Botang
I'm just about to change mine, but mine wont be covered by warranty as the wheels were bought second hand. I have looked into various different makes and models, I have even paid to download the German Magazine Auto Motor und Sport Tyre tests. After all the research I am still none the wiser it seems all have pros and cons and none are a clear winner. If high speed (130+) isnt such a an issue I'd actually be tempted by the Nankang NS-2. They are rated up to 186mph but some users have mentioned high speed stability isnt great although on traction, handling, braking, mileage, etc they seem just as good as if not better than almost all of the premium brands. At ony £123 per tyre from mytyres.co.uk they seem like a good deal compared to the £263 for the Michelin Pilot Sport 2. Ive always been a fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1 but they dont make it in our size, 255/35/20. If anyone is interested here's the tyres I have found available so far: Toyo Proxes T1-S Toyo Proxes T1-R Dunlop SP Sport 9090 MFS XL Dunlop SP Sport 01 MFS XL Marshall Matrac TX KU17 Kumho KU31 XL Kumho 712 Nankang NS2 Pirelli P Zero Rosso Pirelli P Zero Directional Pirelli P Zero Asymmetrical Nokian NRY Linglong L688 Hankook Ventus Sport K104 Yokohama AVS Sport Yokohama Advan Sport BF Goodrich G-Force Profiler Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Asymmetric Bridgestone S03 Pole Position
Jools
I purchased the Car 2 weeks ago, 2002 S8 final edition 37000 miles and 1 owner. When i went to view the car the rear parking sensors didn't work came to an agreement with the owner. Took the car to my Audi dealer who told me about the Tyres, there has been some cases in Germany where the tyres have blown out, the speed rating on the sidewall is ZR-Y but built to a HR spec. Michelin Pilot Sport
Botang
I have just in the last week had to put my spare on mine because the sidewall has gone on the old one I havent had it replaced yet so I think I'll give Michelin a call

AnArtist1
When I bought my car it had Michelins on the back Pirellis on the front. This was due to an incompetent stealer who wrecked the front right tyre before I picked it up. (Nice of them to put matching brands on!!!!) Anyway, could not wait to get rid of the Michelins (due to past experiences), got them changed to Pirellis this is when a huge blister on the inside side wall lining was discovered, could have gone BANG at any time!!! Phew!!!! I guess this is what the recall is about!!

[/ QUOTE ] I think exactly the same had happened to one of my tyres fortunately it never went bang whilst driving but I now have a nice split in the sidewall. I am currently using my spare which is a Pirelli Asymmetrical, and have my old 18" spare in the boot just in case. I have given my details to Michelin and hopefully will get a call tomorrow with details of what to do now.
johnss8
I have now been informed by Audi that there putting 5 new tyres on the car but they won't release the car until it's finished so i'm now driving a A4 2.0t quattro avant such is life. and it's got a full tank of petrol at there expense The problem i've got though is what tyres are they replacing them with because i don't want pilot 2's, will find out tomorrow. Botang
I have to say Michelin have been excellent in dealing with this, they are sending out the replacement tyres to my local dealer today. Apparently they are changing them to the Pilot Sport 2 Asymmetrical tyre.

crasher
Can only agree. I need to change thr fronts very very soon, and the rears not long after. Thought about holding out and getting all 4 done, but this is going to cost me £1k so i need to know i'm choosing the best tyre i can get.
johnss8
I've got to aggree Mitchellin have been brilliant told them my concerns and feed back i've heard about the pilot 2's and they offered me a BF Goodrich instead but i still opted for the pilots so really who cares there for free Having some fun with the A4 at the moment nice when it's not your own car but it seems a bit thirsty though. johnss8
Got the car back today with 5 new Pilot Sport 2's, thank you Mitchelin Talking to the guy's at the stealers the tyres are being recalled beacuse of the wall strength and premature blow outs, got to thinking of some of the speeds i've been doing in the 8 and the tyres could have blown at any time
Ian_C
The grin on your face at MK after you told me how the split sidewall saga ended..... You are a very very lucky man - both in a sense of 4 free tyres and the fact the sidewall didn't let go whilst driving. Ian

PSU
I placed a call through the Michellin help number mid last week and 5 new tyres where delivered to my local tyrefitter this morning. Getting them fitted sometime this week once it has been returned from Listers Audi after putting things straight once Parklands had their hands on it. Anyone want to buy a 2003 A8 2.8 Q Sport with 32K on the clock with 5 brand new 20" tyres + 3 new 20" sportline wheels, major engine work just completed including new cylinder heads? Highly specced and looks stunning!
