matg
Hi I've just purchased a 2002 Passat Estate 2.0 S (130bhp), the stereo in it has been changed for a silver JVC model with CD and it looks totally out of place so I'd like to change it back to the original radio/cassette and then add in a single CD unit. I've had a trawl through ebay and there a number of each unit for sale, as this is my first VW I'd just like some advice of which unit would of been the original and which CD unit to get, plus they are sold without the code how hard is it to get a new code? ebay listings Thanks
mulkbear
Does you passat have two Head uint holes or does it have Climit control ?
pontyslapper
Hello and welcome... I have an 04 Passat Estate 2.0 S and it has the Gamma head unit and the single CD unit. The stealers are supposed to supply the code for free providing you can prove ownership of the car and the radio. I requested my code when I was last in for a service, unfortunately the system which contacts a server in Germany was down. So, I think its pretty straightforward as I wasn't asked for any proof. matg
hi, it has the climate control panel, the below the JVC head unit, then below that a empty space/cubby hole, I'd assumed it would fit in this space?
matg
Hi, So its a Gamma rather than Beta I should be looking for. Sounds like getting the code should be easy then

Wobby
Hi, if your dash looks like this then it isn't easy to change to a double din. ooohh bo***cks, who's moved my pictures Does yours have a climatronic at the top with a radio just below it and a small cubby hole at the bottom to fit papers in? Mines an S model and thats what i had.... I have a load of pictures of the conversion! If i could find them!
matg
yes, thats exactly how its laid out, I assumed that I could remove the JVC, slide in a stock Gamma and then pop a Single CD in the cubby hole - sounds like thats not the case? matg
Was not sure what you meant by double DIN but do now So I need two single DIN units: like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Gamma-Radio-Cas...1QQcmdZViewItem and this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-SINGLE-DIN-CD-P...1QQcmdZViewItem and they should easily fit in? asta
should fit fine. have you had a look at the kenwood vw headunits? you can get black units that have the correct lighting ie. red buttons and blue screens. Better idea as you can listen to mps and also keep you cubby hole.

Wobby
I havn't found the pics yet and i am away from tomorrow till friday. You will have to hack the dash to bits internally, the frame wasn't a bolt on job on mine, it was moulded onto the dash itself. Its tricky getting it all square, best to take it very steady and only cut away as little as possible. Then you will have more places to bolt/ screw to make it strong. EDIT!!!... just looked at the ebay items. They should be ok, but you will also need a new chassis frame and console part, i got mine off ebay (£30 i think)
topgazza
Or go for the superb Blaupunkt Woodstock 54 with DAB
pugboy
I just fitted a CD autochanger in the boot as it was easiest. However if you want good sound quality and something that fits in with the dash you want a becker headunit with the red buttons and blue display in the middle - just like the OE kit. They are pricey though.
NunchukHamster
I have a Sony CDX 5550 fitted. The display is almost a perfect blue match for the VW displays, and the controls light up red, to match everything else. Although silver in colour, it still blends nicely. Will post a pic when I have a mo'.
