Jamescalv
Newbie here, i placed a deposit on an S3 the other day, all seemed fine except the service indicator flashing and beeping at me. The garage im buying the car from will be servcing the car (wouldn't knock any money off and let me get it serviced) however they say they will not be able to take the service indicator off. So do i trust them to do a good job servicing it (they babbled on about how their mechanics are great, but which garage doesnt) and try and get the service indicator reset from somewhere; or do i get it serviced again from an independant specialist? They had some nice cars in, Ferrari, Porsche, Morgan etc so i dont think they'll do a bad job, but would you trust them? Also does anyone know of any independant specialists in the North East area. Cant wait to pick the car up at the weekend, and do the the 4 1/2 hour drive back up! Cheers.
Mollox
Welcome to Tyresmoke I'd be a bit skeptical really.... If they can't reset the service indicator, then they're unlikely to have the equipment to do a fault scan/diagnosis either. From memory, I'm not even sure the service indicator needs any equipment - think its just a dash button/key twist combo but can't say for sure. There's nothing tricky about the service on the S3 really - only exception being the Haldex oil change and you need to specify which service it is - if its the 80k (I think) then its cambelt time and you might as well have the water pump done while they're at it. Jamescalv
Cheers Mollox The car has done 55k so it shouldnt be due for the cambelt yet, although do they have a tendency to snap early? Im guessing nothing major needs doing at this milage? I had a quick search on the forum to see if there was any way of reseting the indicator myself, but couldn't find anything. Mollox
How old is the car? Its worth checking exactly what the service schedule says - I think (someone will confirm) the pre-facelift cars were due cambelts at 60k and the later cars switched to 80k. Although, from what we've heard it seems quite wise to get it done a little earlier than advised
Jamescalv
The car is a pre-facelift. Is there anywhere i can find the service schedule on the net? Any ideas on how much a cambelt change is from an independant specialist?
John_Doe
Hi Skip........this might just be what you need http://www.volkswerk.co.uk/ Good luck......
Chelsea Mick
My service schedule for a 1999 S3 (Pre-facelift), states the cambelt should be changed every 115k miles. I believe the facelift models are 80k. I would be very aware of a garage that says they have serviced the car but cannot reset the service indicator. Can you not get the registration number and pop along to your local Audi dealer and enquire to it's history. They should be able to tell you if it is on thier database. Failing that, I would recommend that you stick it in to your local Audi stealer for it's 60k service when you get the car just for peace of mind. Above all enjoy the car. You've made a good choice
Jamescalv
OK i've done a bit more digging around - the specialist at Volkswerk said that the car is due the timing belt at 60,000 miles but i also rang an Audi dealer who said that the car is due it at either 80,000 or 115,000 miles depending on chassis number. So i'm still confused. Mick, how many miles has yours done? Have you changed yours?
evotista
You might want to check out my research i did some time ago. LINK Here If yours is a pre facelift officially it is 115k miles or 5 years...however would recommend to do the change at 60-70k particularly if chipped. Jamescalv
Cheers evotista. I got a quote from Volkswerks for £580 which isnt even a main dealer. Yes i'm pretty much convinced that the cambelt is not due until 115k now, althugh i may get it changed earlier. I spoke to the guy at the garage i'm buying the car from who also says its 115k, and he must have got that figure from the service schedule with the car. So does anybody know any key flick codes or button presses to reset the indicator?
doogal1972
The combination to reset the service indicator is in the hand book. But, sometimes it will un reset it's self if that makes sense, and say you need a service again. If it does this and keeps doing it, you will have to have it reset by someone with the correct equipment.
s3tny
just in case you cant find it with engine off hold right button on dis in and turn ignition on and service light comes on then push and hold left button and service will reset usualy for 12000miles hope this helps and good choice in car and good luck with it
Mo-S3
Doesnt that take the servicing off AVS by doing that?
Jamescalv
Thanks for the replies, very helpful. Is there anyway of reseting the service indicator without turning off the AVS?
Chelsea Mick
[ QUOTE ] Mick, how many miles has yours done? Have you changed yours? [/ QUOTE ] Mine has done 75k and I had no plans to change it until the 115k service. Well that was until I had to replace the engine recently but that's another story.... doogal1972
[ QUOTE ] Doesnt that take the servicing off AVS by doing that? [/ QUOTE ] In the hand book I'm sure it says if you don't get the car serviced by Audi for whatever reason, you can do this combo to reset the service indicator. I don't recall it saying you take it off AVS byt doing this. I could be wrong though.
s3tny
I think it does take it off avs as it resets to 12000 miles dont know if avs reset can be done but again surely if this garage can service gt then why cant they reset it?
doogal1972
But doesn't it start going up again after the car's settled down after the service?
evotista
Doogal72 and Skip If doing the manual service indicator dash reset of cars that support and are set to AVS as of MY00 then the car is taken OFF AVS and onto standard interval servicing. The only way of keeping the car set on AVS is to reset at an Audi dealer using a VAS 5051 unit or with a friend who has VAG-COM. Standard interval would be 15,000 km (9,320 miles)max or 1 year...although values can be entered in miles so generally accepted to be 10,000 miles max.
