seaco
OK now for my next problem on the saga of my Phatbox, I was told that Audi use round plugs fitted to the back of their CD changers so I had a look today and to my horror I found this? Anyone have any idea what has happened?
peterb
Audi boot-mounted changers use round plugs, the glovebox-mounted changers use square plugs (which are the same as the VW plugs).
timps
You need a Phatnoise (VW) interface lead part # 000 051 592 Unfortunately you have got Phatnoise (Audi) interface lead part # 000 051 592A You can buy Phatnoise (VW) interface lead from www.clairparts.com $ 45.35 or do a search on Google might be cheaper somewhere else. or Modify the existing Phatnoise Audi cable to fit using the pin outs on www.phathack.com (requires cutting of cable) . seaco
I have contacted the chap I bought it from on Ebay and it seems that he will exchange it for me, so thankyou for the info I had no idea it was a VW part?.. Maybe Audi owners with dash mounted CD changers should keep this in mind!

Didnt pay any custom duties or nothing ! How happy am I ? Its cost me less than £130 !! And only took 30 mins to fit it
Biscuits
Does anyone know how the Phatnoise/box fits in the glovebox? Is it a direct replacement for the CD changer in the A4/S4. Looks a different shape for starters... and the changer I have is the slot load 6 disk type (not cartridge type).
Scotty
Strip the metal off and it's fine.

seaco
I have the same and you have to remove the tasty alloy casing, undo all the screws except the one on the back then you need a thin object to slide under the bottom of the plastic face plate and gently lever it up there's two catches once these release it lifts quite easily. There are two more screws under there once these are undone the casing comes off, I'm going to make a faceplate to box the Phatbox in as I think it'll be a bit unsightly with it's innards showing. I would like to know what Audi doin this situation?

Scotty
I thought about making a faceplate but didn't for two reasons. [1] I don't have my head in the glovebox that often and it's dark all around it so it doesn't really notice. [2] It's inside the fecking glovebox! Digbee
Looks like I will have to go for the rear mounted option, found fab install notes here: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec127.shtml This website is USA but is very very big. Glovebox installation found here: http://prw.prehiti.net/s42k5phatbox/ another here: http://members.cox.net/rcflier/Library/WebServer/Documents/pictures/phatbox/index.html Cheers Peter

Biscuits
A quality install !!!! Especially like the self tappers poking through...! The aluminium frame/heatsink is much smaller on the Phatbox shown............. ?
mb
[ QUOTE ] The aluminium frame/heatsink is much smaller on the Phatbox shown............. ? [/ QUOTE ] I imagine the heatsinks have been trimmed - down. I can't believe either of those installs - they have done some of teh work so neatly but other parts just seem illogical ! Best one I remember seeing was the enitre unit transplanted into what was basically an ice cream tub held together with cable ties !
Chav
Why can't they just make the phatbox in a black, single-din sized box! The shape is stupid, and the heatsink looks horrible! (IMO - but at least it's out of sight most of the time eh!)
Scotty
I don't even believe the metal is a heatsink. There's so little in it the heat is minimal. I think they did it so they could get away with the rip off prices they were charging.

mb
I assume you will just bend some ally to make a better sized box ? Don't want to answer for Scotty but if you were to post the template I am sure a lot of people would find it useful. Cheers Martin
