iclarke
Ok bit confused, I'm sure I read in the manual that you can't have the ECON button on at the same time as the AUTO button however I went to turn the fan speed down earlier and the AUTO came on by itself with ECON still lit up. Turn the fan speed back up and AUTO went out ... did I just not read the manual properly or is something funny going on. Cheers.
doogal1972
I think if you adjust the climate fan speed and it hits what it would see as holding the temperature constant, that takes it into auto. If you push econ while it is in auto mode I think it just recirculates the air as apposed to sucking new air in as per normal. When you leave it on auto the fan speed will start off very low until you build up heat and then it gradually builds up the fan speed. When the required heat setting is reached, the fan will slow down until it is regulating the heat at a constant temp. Took me a little while to work it out properly but now I leave mine on auto all the time and don't ever adjust the fan speed. Hope you can understand my ramblings?! cosmicblue
The ECON button turns off the Air Conditioning compressor (takes about 10% of the engine's power output so adversely effects fuel economy ), so the cooling/air drying elements of the Climate Control system are disabled. At this time of the year (i.e. Winter) you can leave it on ECON all of the time in principle.** ECON+AUTO is like saying 'Do the best you can on maintaining the interior temperature without the Air Con Compressor'. If you change the fan speed then you are are overriding the automatically calculated fan speed and thus the Climate system turns AUTO off on the basis that you know best. My guess would be that you are in ECON mode and find you have mist on the inside of the windows that you manually alter that fan speed? This is the time to turn of ECON to let the Air Con compressor start and thus be able to dry out the moist air inside the car. Also make sure that the Re-circ button is off beacuse that will also circulate the moist air around inside the car and windows will mist up really quickly! Does this make sense? ** It is reckoned to be a good idea to run the AirCon for 10 minutes every week as the refrigerant gas has a lubricant in it to keep all the internal components working correctly. Aside from this leave it in ECON mode and enjoy.
iclarke
Thanks guys, I think this helps. Bottom line is it's notmal for it to be in auto AND for ECON to be on as well ... Cheers Ian.
doogal1972
[ QUOTE ] (takes about 10% of the engine's power output so adversely effects fuel economy [/ QUOTE ] You serious? 10%?! That's loads, I knew aircon took a bit of power but that much?! I run my car with auto and no econ on all year round! Bugger.
Gren
Never noticed difference in either economy or performance in mine but wifes old Golf did. Get the feeling the more powerful the car the less the difference it makes. Sort of like an absolute power loss (e.g. 10bhp) rather than a percentage. doogal1972
I hardly ever used to use the climate in my Cooper S because of fears of power loss and fuel economy. 10bhp is still worth hitting the econ button for though me thinks! It's going in econ mode till the summer now, apart from the obvious 10mins a week as suggested!
s3geezer
My S3 has always got the air con on (unless it's below 2 degrees and the car autonatically turns it off). This way the air con pipes stay lubed up and it doesn't break come Summer!
rbjess
just picked up the car today and the climate control is blowing warm air, great on the hottest day of the year. Am I correct in assuming there is no way that the sport model could possib;y have no air con? It has the climate control buttons/system in the dash and is an 08 sport?
