Can anyone help me. My wife is looking to get a company car over the next few weeks and at the moment she has a Mk 4 Golf GTI, we are looking to go slightly bigger (children to come at some point) and th elist form the company includes thee A3 Sportback.

Could anyone tell me if it is worth considering, ie is the boot bigger than the Mk 4 and room behind the back seats if taking adult passengers.

Thanks

The sportback is certainly longer and has more space than the GTI and the standard A3.

Give the link below a click and read the review on my motor, and there are links to the gallery.

On my company scheme the A3 2.0T Sportback is cheaper than the Golf GTI which is a cheaper car so the A3 is the better option in that respect. 169144-ok.gif

I am in a very similar position in having a Golf but need to upgrade to something larger (and in my case a diesel).

The Golf boot has a quoted capacity of 350 litres compared to the A3 Sportback which has 370 litres - hardly worth swapping really! However the rear leg room does seem larger which is all helpful for family holidays with the little one.

I really like the look and finish of the Audi, esp the Sportline with roof rails - knocks spots off the VWs (and BMWs) but I'm really nervous about buying one due to all of the press reports says they provide poor driver involement (not a critism you can aim at the Golf GTI which in my opiniion is superb).

Apparently Audi did carry out some improvements in late 05 but feedback is still not great. Audi need to take lesson from the Ford Focus to so see how a car can feel!

I'd be interested to know what decision you come to Jimmy.

I looked at a Golf before I got my Sportback. They really are very different cars in different cars. If you want basic, value for money then the Golf is a great car. If you are looking for comfort, luxury, etc go with the Sportback. You can also do more with the Sportback, S-Line styling inside and out, nicer wheels, etc. I went with Quattro because I had it before on my A4 and loved. However, it does eat into the boot space.

I'd save drive both and see what you think.

Unfortunately I have driven them all and I cannot buy what to buy ...I'll just have to decide what I'm prepared to compromise on (quality or driver involvement).

Very keen to see how the S3 drives eventhough I'm after a diesel. Do you think they will do a 5 door?

If only they crossed an A3 Sportback with a Focus!!

I'm not taking the p*ss ...have any of you guys tried a 1.6 Focus on a country road? No acceleration but cannot half but a smile on your face round the bends. The new shape Focus looks rubbish (IMHO) but the quality has jumped up a mile from the Mk1(not enough yet though, lol).

I have to say that my Sportback is excellent for driver involvment and easily the equal of the Golf GTI.

I have driven both as have others and in 2.0 T form there isn't that much in it for involvement at all. A few others have said the same. Look in the bmw 130 review and their are references to the same in there. I have even read a post on a review which had a 2.0 Non Turbo Sportback running a GTI close very close, the 2.0T surely must get closer.

What I would say is compare like with like, don't test drive a 2.0TDI or even the V6 Sportback as they do feel very different having heavier engines.

Read the review below on mine and you will see I'm far from unhappy with mine. Its handles very well, goes like hell and has quality everywhere you touch it. I certainly haven't read anything like the issues with quality as the new GTI owners are sometimes having. 169144-ok.gif
