MicroRoadPilot

if the questions are to me,

the cables can be pushed into the gaps around windscreen edge.

gps antennae is located ontop of dash infront of central speaker up against windscreen with wires pushed into windscreen gap.

with regards to laserpilot - i don't use it, for the simple reason that if it goes off you are 99% caught anyway (and i would rather not know until nip turned up)! i personally would go for a jammer (aka garage door opener) instead.

i can send some other pics if needed

Mine is here (see attachement) and hardwired into fuse board

where'd you put the GPS receiver ? I've put the display in the same spot and wired into the fuse board, but would like the GPS receiver hiden under the dash.

do you know how to take the vents out of the dash board to get easier access ?

When I installed mine I removed the lower trim panel (around the pedals) & then brought the antenna up from there - I attached it to some bodywork of the car & could see sky through the widscreen (was quite uncomforatble !) this was on a golf but you may find that easier than via the vents.

I originally had mine on the dash but recently moved it underneath, I tried getting to the front of the screen but there's no easy access due to a huge alloy crossmember, so I took out the Instrument panel (2 screws) and put the receiver between the crossmember and dash top - perfect fit tight enough not to need any sticky stuff and works fine.

This is on an A3, don't know if other models are the same.

I actually always tuck the gps antenna above the cluster but still under the dash, there is a little pocket that holds it in a treat and that part of the dash is really thin so you get full signal all the time.

Does your Roadpilot go offline often?

I bought one and my Dad got another 3 points taking him to 9 before it arrived so I put it in his car for him, however I have been using his merc recently a fair bit as I was selling my Avant and noticed it goes offline quite alot, I asked if it did that with him and he said yeah, always has.

Any ideas?

You sure the Merc's windscreen isn't heat reflective? The one in the wifes Clio is and the Tom Tom is very hit and miss.....

I've never had a problem with the RoadPilot in the A4.

I have had this problem occasionally - it is really weird as both my SatNav (behind clocks) & MRP (under dash in corner) fail to find signal at the same time (the MRP usually takes a while to "fix" - I can see this on teh SatNav as it will see some satellites but not give me the geographical location for a minute)

Roadpilot were really helpful and lent me an antenna/power clip so I could test my install.

My conclusion was a) it seems most likley to struggle when it is misty b) on the move it is harder to get a signal than stationary c) it seems to often come about having stopped the car for just a few minutes.

The next time I start the car it usually gets a fix quickly so I am not really sure what is going on - RP thought the 2 antennas may be interfering with each other & suggested I locate them far apart - I had this problem before the SatNav unit so I don't think this is the case.

In the summer I am going to bring the MRP antenna up to behind the clocks to see if a) it gets better signal & b) if they interfere or not !

If this doesn't work I think I will try to get a VW external FM/GPS aerial/antenna & use a reradiating (don't like the sound of that but assume they are safe !) antenna to pass signal to the units in the dash (car has curtain air bags so can't drop headlining) get a stronger signal.

That said they have behaved for ages now so not sure if I will bother beyong resiting the MRP antenna !

Don't know if this has any relevance but I bought my MRP about 18 months ago, a couple of months back it got broken and I sent it back for repair, the repaired/new one I got back will usually get a fix in less than a couple of mins and often in less than a minute, but the 'old' one usually took at least 4 or 5 minutes and often much longer - like 10 mins or more (a few times it took over 20 mins) so it would appear to me that the new ones are better than the old - unless my old one was 'duff' I'm still using the same antenna and until recently it was in the same place as before - on top of the dash (now it is under the dash).

mine went for repair in december, would lock on and then go off again. snet mine back, came back fixed, and as DukeDesmo says, it now locks on a lot quicker. I got the extended antennae cable for other car which has coated windscreen - rest it on the parcel shelf.

Thanks for the replies.

I have just realised that I have to really hold the RP tight in teh update cradle to get it to be seen, so I think it may be this, I will try and bend the pins out a little further to make sure there is a decent contact.

I had the gps antenna stuck to the roof to see if it is any better so I know it is not a reflective windscreen problem.

Thanks for the replies. 169144-ok.gif
