I have a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T and i want to upgrade the turbo. it has 83,000 miles on it. so what would be a good turbo to upgrade to not anything fancy though just a basic upgrade like around $500-$600. and what would i need to rebuild in my engine? give me some good feed back. thanks

You can bolt the larger turbo from the 225 bhp Audi TT straight onto your car without any mods, although you might want to condiser an intercooler.

Not sure on the retail price, but you should be able to pick one up from a breakers yard if you find one specialising in Audis. Get the car remapped as well and you will easily be able to get 250 bhp out of the thing.

yeah im gonna get an intercooler also and the car remapped. im from the US so i dont know what a breakers yard is. Would i go to a dealer? and also if i put the larger turbo on my bora 1.8T from the audi TT would i need to do any rebuildiong to my motor if it has 83,000 miles on it.

If you are wanting to run significantly higher power then it would make sence to upgrade your own engine, the 225TT engien has stronger bottom end, larger injectors, and a few other bits and bobs, I think I worked out to bring a 150bhp engien upto 225 spec (thus chippable to 260ish bhp) you would be looking to spend about $3000 in parts at dealer prices.

IF you can fidn the parts at a wreckers then its a lot cheaper.

Cat back is a full exhaust from the catalytic convertor(s) back, turbo back is directly from the turbos and removes the catalytic convertors altogether. That could mean it may fail an emissions test (I'm not sure what tests you have in the US) so it may be better to get a cat back system and fit sports cats.

On the 1.8T engines, the catalytic converter is directly after the turbo. You can get aftermarket higher flow catalytic converters to increase the bhp (by 5 or 6 bhp) on the 1.8T, but they about $500 to $700 - that's in addition to the $500 to $700 for the exhaust system.

As Shark says, depends on whether you're legally allowed to run cars in the US without catalytic converters - if you're in California, I know the answer is definitely no!

Up Top0,

are you intending to run serious power? so we are talking increased boost, fuel map,, fuel pump, boost controler, uprated engine components etc? if so then you will only see gain in gettin high performance Spark plugs otherwise its not worth your expense. By Wire im guessing your reffering to HT leads?

Personally if i was doing this Id just rip out the old engine and drop in a TT 225BHP engine along with wiring looms and all. you could also drop in the drive train too, but that is a lot of work.

You could run the standard plugs on the car. If you're going to 270+ bhp, you would be well advised to get a set of cooler running plugs - talk to www.eiptuning.com or www.vf-engineering.com

When you say "wires", I presume you mean the HT leads that would normally run from the distributor to the top of the spark plugs. The 1.8T (and most modern petrol VW engines) run what are called "coil packs", with one sitting directly above each spark plug. Everything is controlled electronically via the ECU.

HTH

Oh, it's all going Pete Tong.... ROLLEY~14.GIF

My post related to your question:

ok... now what kind of spark plugs and wires yould be good for my car and injectors

HT leads go from a distributor to the top of the spark plugs, but your car doesn't run a distributor in the traditional sense, so you don't need them...

What did you mean by "wires"?

You should be fine with the standard injectors. It's only if you start making serious mods that you'll need to consider upgrading these.

What's your budget? Hopefully we can then steer you down the best route to get the most power for your money.

power mods wise you will need a Chip, forced Air induction, change the stock DV for an uprated Re-circ dump valve. (dont fit an atmospheric one is will screw up the vag engine), intercooler and turbo, if ur really serious...a boost controller and an uprated fuel pump. The list is massive to be honest. you have to weigh up justifying the cost of having such power and actually being able to use it...

As i said in an earlier post I would just drop in another engine from a TT (the 225) that way you can also run the drive train too (quattro system) its loads of work but if your after power its the way to go in my view. no sense in having over 225BHP going through the front wheels...waste of power. you will eat through the clutch, gearbox and TYRES too.

also if you do want uprated power...have you thought about uprating the brakes too? no good in having power and cracking 0-60 times if you can't stop just as quick.

But power mods alone will be i reckon $2000 atleast.
