sidicks
Chaps I need some advice regarding tyres for my father-in-law's car (old Lexus). Currently the car has Bridgestones (225/55/ZR16), but it needs 2 new tyres, and he's asked me for help as his initial quote was for £170 each......!! The car won't be travelling more than 3,000 miles in a year, and at a relatively sedate pace - no high speed motorway driving, purely short trips. for this reason I'm inclined to recommend one of the lesser known brands, rather than Pirelli, Michelin, etc. I guess there are 2 questions: 1) the current tyres are ZR rated, but after a brief search on the internet, I can only find W rated tyres in this size. My understanding is that W-tyres are actually intended for up to 168mph (rather than 149mph for ZR tyres), so this shouldn't be a problem - can anyone confirm ? 2) What is the general view on some of the Korean brands - Hankook, etc ? I'm sure I read a review somewhere that indicated that these were good value, but were relatively cheap because they didn't have the brand kudos of Pirelli or Michelin etc ? Obviously, I don't want to recommend anything that isn't safe or up to the job, but given the amount and type of driving that he does, paying £150+ per corner doesn't seem extremely excessive, particularly when money is tight. Having said that, I might end up paying for the tyres, as he's been very helpful to us recently when moving house, but obviously I don't want to pay over the odds either ! Any recommendations for other brands? I'll give a few local tyre-fitter a call, but anticipate that Black-Circles will be the best way forward (do TS.net members still get 10% discount?). sidicks
A quick browse on a Lexus forum suggests that Nankang or Hankook are both considered pretty good tyres, particularly given the price. Anyone else have any experience of these tyres (good or bad) or like to recommend an alternative? Thanks Sidicks
collease
Although i hated mine when i got them now they are worn in they are building my confidence. daveblackley
A tyre marked with just Zr has no maximum top speed. . . .ti is designed for speeds of 150mph + if the size has a z in the tyre size and then 2 other numbers and a letter e.g 94w or 91y, you them have to go by that marking which are 168+186 mph respectively. (incases you've not guessed i work in the tyre trade )
