durtydurty
Have a A3 1.8 T Sport has covered 61K and noticed yesterday that just before the turbo kicks in and starts whistling there is a rattle from the left hand side of the engine, sounds very like its at the back of the engine bay passenger side. Once the turbo kicks in it stops, but is definitly there before the turbo comes in and at no other time... Could it be the vanes on the turbo on the way out, performance doesnt seem to of been affected Have had A3's T sports before and heard nothing else like it before and am a tad worried about it. Any advice would be apprecaitted.
Paul
the only thing that springs to mind is the DV. Its situated back of the engine bay passenger side But i would call that more of a flutter, and it probably continue once the turbo spun up. have you ever changed the DV? for a new or aftermarket one? New they are about £27 from vagparts.
durtydurty
A flutter, now I was gonna liken it too a gush of air but thought it would sound like I was taking the mikey, but its defintly like a flutter, that would be a good place to start. How would I check that out ?
bazza_g
my VX220 Turbo had a rattle just before the turbo kicked in but it turned out to be the toothbrush I dropped in the engine bay that was trapped in the undertray
durtydurty
DV, is that divertor valve or dump valve?
Paul
diverter valve. It recirculates the excess boost. can also sound like blowing over the top of a coke bottle. If you never changed it, your due one! its a throw away item, if its plastic oem valve. so you can either replace like for like or use if for an excuse for an aftermarket upgrade that will be servicable and more robust. Pic for location to follow.
Paul
Dv is located under the engine cover where the red circle is. You can see my after market DV.(the bit with Turbo Dynamics showing) in this picture. This is eactly where your find the OEM Plastic Bosch item. only 3 Audi clips hold it in place, your have to Snip/twist and cut them off, and replace with Jubilees. Some people have been able to keep the clip on the smallest top vac hose, just by wigging and pulling it off. The others will need replacing for sure. durtydurty
Im fairly rubbish at engine type stuff but is it quite easy?, Im not afraid to get my hands dirty but wouldnt wanna mess it up. And is there any advantage to be had in buying a AMD one for example over a standard one? That looks like where the noise is coming frrm too, I can relax a little now... Paul
mine is the Amd Viper. Its more robust and servicable piston valve, made of metal. Any query you can take it apart and check its not sticking, or in your case passing. Hardest part is the Audi one use clips. They have to be snipped/twised off. After that its a doddle. 2 or 3 jubilee clips tops.
durtydurty
Cheers for all this, much apprecaitted. Daft question time though.....is there anyway of telling whether its defintly this without getting to involved with taking it all apart? etc.....told you it was daft!! Paul
Not really. Sometimes you get a vagcom error, sometimes you dont. But it really is the first port of call. And the cheapest one if you get another OEM valve. If it is knackered then you should also get your performance back.

durtydurty
Checked the DV today with a vacum hose and it holds fine.....Most odd. Took out a mate and he said its more of a resonance, like a heat shield or something similar!! Will have a look underneath at the weekend and see what I can see! durtydurty
Have just driven it home and had a really good listen and its making the noise after the turbo now, if you blip the throttle and let it off the whooshing sound is there as well. Sounds like a dump valve psssssst noise. Split hose possibly ?, I am loathed to book it into Audi at £100 an hour to diagnose it but if thats what it takes!!
