Feckless
I travel across to Europe a couple of times a month so am often driving in France, Belgium, Holland and of course Germany. I have had the car a couple of months so far and have only been over to Germany during bad weather and worse traffic, until now! So what'll it do? One hundred and fifty three, son. The car is a MY06 manual on 17". It accelerated up to 140 pretty quickly, but after that you have to grit your teeth and keep you foot flat down for another couple of miles to push it on over 150. It seemed to hit a wall at just over 150 which suggests some sort of limiter, especially as it was only doing 5500rpm in sixth. So plenty left till the redline. As has been discussed elsewhere the speedo isn't entirely accurate and my satnav recorded the true top speed as 142mph.
stevie_d
Should do a bit more than 142 Did it feel stable at that speed?
spankit
dsg 18's, x-mass day, empty motorway, got to 140mph on the clock without any trouble. Did not push it any further, or my luck with old bill, was very planted and stable at this speed. No noticible increase in road noise etc. than if you were doing 90mph
RedRobin
DSG 17s, KoniFSD+Eibach (rock steady and very smooth), 128 on Road Angel (accurate), held it for several miles on dual carriageway....Could have gone quicker but a little traffic....Very impressed. Millteks surprisingly quiet, conversation with passenger no problem. Braking smooooth. Same as spankit - no extra road noise. The GTI is one heck of a car

RedRobin
I had both hands on the wheel and was very focussed, eyes on full alert. I'm glad to say that my hairy biker friend passenger wasn't leaning over me!
Feckless
It was stable and felt solid at this speed. But it will not go one click faster. As I said it gets to 140 easily, in fact it'll do 135 in 5th. But to push on you really need a lot of room. (The A31 from Bottrop to Emden is good.) Im sure it hits a limiter at 5500rpm in top. I held it at this speed for about 2-3mins and it wouldnt go faster, OR slower. This would make sense too because I think all German cars (except Porsche) are limited at 250kph. The brakes can handle it to. Before I took this photo and was doing an indicated 135/140 someone pulled out about half a km in front of me. Just leaning on the brakes triggered the ABS, whihc scared the S**t out of me. But no problems. Im going to ask the dealer whether its limited and see if they can turn it off. twopipes
I got 145mph in mine according the VW Speedo which we all know to be an exaggerated figure. It did shoot straight up to 145 but showed no signs of going any faster. Maybe I should have slipped it into S mode for a lttle extra. Glad I did it but never again. My wife was sleeping through the warp speed. That’s a good testament for the GTI being quiet at the top end.

jonathansargent
Hey - is it that quiet that the wife will stay asleep? I tried my Celica T sport in France over Xmas - quiet motorway - was going through 120 and she woke up - road and tyre noise!!! Hope the GTi is quiter than that and I can try again!!! NewNiceMrMe
I thought the official top speeds were 146 for the manual and 145 for the DSG cars. I'm unsure how the car could get to 153mph and seem to hit a 'limiter' when VW's own figures show a top speed of 8/9 mph below even the reading on the speedo (which as has been pointed out is going to be out by a fair bit anyway at that speed). Feckless
I quite agree. But the figures as I wrote them are what the car did. The bit about a limiter is purely my thoughts about how the car behaved. In case your wondering if it makes a difference...I had just filled up in The Netherlands with a full tank of Shell "V-Power" Which I think is Dutch for "Optimax" Also it was 2 deg C, so should have been good for the turbo. RedRobin
I don't think that any of us can be very accurate about exactly what speed we have achieved. I, for one, have never set out with the intention of finding the max but have gone with the flow and driven in that upper zone. I know it's interesting to discuss but what does it matter anyway how fast the GTI will go re absolute top speed? Do we really need to challenge VW's figures? She can go 130-140-ish and is very smooth and feels very safe all the way there. Isn't that more important? And it's not a requirement of owning a GTI to max it out. Simonl
Come on MrMe, we all had our Novas SR's, Fiesta 1.2's and Astra 1.3's (in the glory days) well over the ton ten, when by the book they could only do 98 or so. I hit 115 in my SR once (with three up + luggage) was in a race with a TDI Mondeo! Funniest was my mate that claimed his 900cc panda could cruise at over a 100 with 4 people! We couldn't even get 4 people in it!

Feckless
Thats why I keep my high speed exploits the other side of the channel. I cant afford risking going this fast over here. A nice big roundabout on the other hand can be a blast.
