Bora Gearbox Explosion

Well, a little background first.

I

bought my bora july this year, was very happy with it. 5 years old, about 40,000miles on the clock. Within two weeks i crashed it driving to work destroying most of the outershell.

After the insurance job it was back on the road again gleeming like it should be. Within a month I had one blow out and a smashed rear windscreen. Back on the road again, but for how long?

Around two weeks ago, whilst trying to reverse, my wheels completly locked. As though i was stuck on something on the ground. I managed to push the car forwards slightly and then put it into reverse. Deciding this wasnt the best thing to be happening I drove straight to the VW dealer, listers, in nuneaton where i live.

As i pulled up and put the handbreak on, My drivers side door would not open. Climbing out the passengerside with difficulty i walked in and reported the problem. The car was booked in for a full service and check with two notes, A)

Fix drivers side door and B) Make extensive checks to the gear box. All of which ended up costing £600 (as i needed new tires as well)

Listers told me that after oil checks and a full inspection they could not find any fault with the gear box and wrote it off as "safe to drive".

Two days ago on the way home i hear a very nasty grinding noise. Not being able to stop anywhere i drove home with my hazards on and trying to keep the car in neutral as much as possible. At the end of my journey, litterally 2minutes away from my house, A loud crunch, a small bang and a series of little pops signalled the explosion of my gear box, unable to use any gears to proppel the car i was forced to pull up on the side of the road and walk to my house. Called the RAC out and they took me car and all on a pickup truck.

Back to listers once again and the damage report is not good, £1800 to fix a problem that should have been fixed when i told them about the problems with the gear box in the first place. Seeing as the car cost £5000 and in total has had £3500 worth of insurance repairs and £2500 worth of out of pocket repairs (if i go ahead with the repair that is)

I really want to know if is it really worth it? Shall i just ditch this curse and get a new car? Can I buy a cheap gear box and have it fitted? Or should i play merry hell with

listers for not finding the problem?

Im at a loss and would love any help or ideas you could give me... Now you might understand the Username "unlucky dave"

Thanks in advance.

I think you need to try to establish if any of the faults are attributable to either the initial accident or to Listers failing to diagnose the fault correctly.

Does the car not have any warrenty on it? Most VW cars would come with 12 months dealer warrenty?

Also I think you have got your user name wrong - sounds to me like you survived the accident well enough - so i'd say it makes you pretty lucky.

Welcoem to tyresmoke.

I bought the car from a local car dealer, We did have a warrenty which became void when the car was in an accident.

I doubt that the accident could have caused a gearbox malfunction, however I do not believe that listers checked the problem as they should have done... Proving this is a shade away from impossible.

I would say that the only luck I had at the time was the fact the golf course existed, If anything else I doubt I would be around to care about my gear box. However, If I had been driving any other car I am sure the iron fence would have ripped me and the car appart.

Thanks to the bora I still have a life, and my legs left.

Well I would perhaps start by writing to Listers and cc VW uk asking why you ask for a fault to be diagnosed, giving a detailed description of the problem, only to have the part in question then self destruct a matter of days later - if you make enough fuss then you might at least get a contribution to the costs.
