shao_khan
Welcome to Tyresmoke. For performance gains you will need to spend a lot of money - There is a company in Stafordshire called Advanced Autosport (I think thats the name) they prep rally cars and can give you nearly 200bhp from your engine, but cost wise you would be looking at nearly the cost of the car again!!!! Suspension wise look at somelike like KW or FK coilovers - had them on my beetle coupe and they improve things tremendously, FK also make a rollbar set which again helps improve handling. Hope that helps some.
RedRobin
Re suspension (an important mod which is often overlooked) I would also check out Koni FSD if they make for the Beetle: web page
Mook
Welcome to Tyresmoke doublea If you're looking to tune the engine, there's really very little you can do without spending a shed load of money by bolting on a turbo or supercharger. I don't even know if you can get an aftermarket exhaust for the 1.6 engine. I had my 2.0 litre Bug remapped by RSD and it went from 115 bhp to an un-whopping 122 bhp. It hardly made any difference at all to the overall performance, apart from running more smoothly. What kind of performance increases are you looking for?
