Creaking Steering column

I have a 1999 A6 1.9 TDI - recently I had a rubbing noise from what appeared to be the steering column. I had the column lubed by the local garage. However now after driving the car for 10 minutes or so each journey, it goes from being fine to making a creaking noise. I'm guessing that the lubrication has helped but wonder if it needs more to 'work its way in'. Has anyone got this problem (it seems common) or any ideas on how to remedy it???

Without sounding too dumb - I am guessing the adjuster you mention is the column height adjuster, which makes sense as the creaking is less severe when it is slightly off the max height. Where did you spray the teflon? Just so I don't spray in the wrong place and spray too much....

Not dumb at all mate, the adjuster is exactly what you described. I moved it through all its adjustment just to ease things. the noise comes from plastic on plastic so a little teflon on the surface of the plasic shroud and anywhere it might make contact. my colum has never made the noise again. Teflon spray leaves a nice shinney coating but it only needs a little spray to do its job.Do not get it on your steering wheel bud! and what ever you do dont spray it down onto your pedals blush.gif it would make braking fun....NOT. again hope this helps.
