bal5sidhu
Had my GTi DSG for just over a week now. took it out for drive today (started from cold) and noticed a whining/whistling noise from engine/drivetrain. It was there on start up. Sounds like a rope whistling through the air when swung fast or a bit like a choppers blades cutting the air (apologies for being too colourful!). It's sort of a "beat" in the background to the general engine noise which speeds up as revs increase and slows as they drop. It did disappear after 10mins or so. Anyone had anything similar? Any views as to what it might be?
RedRobin
Whining/whistling sounds turbo related to me. I notice that my turbo whistles softly and more audibly when it's colder but not like a rythmic chopper blade (great description btw). I actually like the sound but I'm a xzorst note freak anyway! What's your gut feeling about the sound? Something wrong? How many miles have you done now? Any change in performance relating to the sound? Neimad
Hard to say. Have you tried starting it up, then popping the bonnet and seeing if it's coming from the engine bay? My initial thought would be that it was the turbo spinning when cold. Still, if you're worried about it you should take it to your dealer and get their opinion of it -- ask if one of the techs can just come and listen to it before actually booking it in though, just to see if they think it's a problem. If it persists as the weather gets warmer, take it back to the dealer and insist they look in to it. It's under warrenty, so you're better off finding out sooner rather than later. Snoopy
Without hearing it myself it would be guess work but could be a number of things. If its a thump thump tapping noise at tickover it will be the gas circulation chamber valve opening and closing (its normal some cars are far noiser than others for this) but that goes when its reved so thats out. Cambelt too tight or rubbing the plastic casing makes the woosh woosh noise same with most other belts if there too tight. Baring in one of the belt tensioners is more a rattle, scraping humming type of noises but could be it. Sounds like it may just be a belt or it could be normal and just the turbo your hearing. bal5sidhu
Red - the cars covered 500miles. my gut feeling on the noise was that it wasn't right but related to the cold weather. It disappeared as the car warmed up and didn't happen today (less cold). BTW i think rythmic was the word i was searching for! There was no effect on performance. i discounted the turbo on the basis that you wouldn't hear it at idle (maybe i'm wrong)? Snoopy's belt theory makes sense - if it happens again i think it's dealer time. although of course it will have disappeared between leaving home and arriving at the stealership.... Thanks for the feedback guys - useful as always
winrya
i dont know what you guys think but personally i think the GTI makes lots of strange noises when idleing, more so when its cold. What pleases me is the noise it makes when your driving. I have to say that when i test drove one with 65 miles on the clock i remember thinking how rough it sounded idleing as we swapped over. I think you may find all the noises normal, just monitor it, if it doesnt feel right when driving take it back and have the dealer look at it. RedRobin
You're absolutely right, Ryan. You can have been out on a great drive with the engine in full glorious song and come home, get out to open up the garage door and she sounds as if she hasn't been built properly! And that's on straight through Millteks!
cawky
Red- from what I ve heard the FSI engine works as similiar as a diesel engine as a petrol engine can get to one ! and we all know what noise diesel engines make, I hope this makes sense,I am sure other guys will help. Neimad
Yes, the new FSI engines have a high-pressure fuel rail which mimicks a number of modern diesel engines (although not VW's own "PD" (Pumpe-Düse - Unit Injector) diesels). Although during idle the fuel is provided via a low pressure fuel pump, not the high-pressure fuel rail -- whether this differs from "common rail" turbo diesel design I'm unsure though. RedRobin
Neimad & cawky - Thanks that's useful info for all, especially when people first get their new Mk5 GTI - It's not a sound that we expect!
bal5sidhu
spot on about the strange noises from the FSI engine - does sound like half of the bits are rolling around loose! My particular noise there again today - took neimads advice and opened the bonnet. definitely coming from the engine and close to a belt. this time the noise disappeared more quickly than the first time. might be paranoia but i now remember that when it first happened i noticed a jerk as i engaged D immeditely afterwards. same thing happened today - slight jerk. No effect on driving though. Not worried yet...
RedRobin
Good idea to keep a record of all such events and then include the info in your report to the dealer when you feel ready. Def get if fixed under warranty.
bal5sidhu
Good idea Red - will def make a note of what happens and when to back up any warranty claim. have to say, i consider myself a lot more "dealer savvy" now after a few months of TSN training! Dealer contact on previous car amounted to nothing more than 3 routine services and couple of headlight bulbs...
