Oatz
And if so, did you need any adaptors in order for it to work? The reason I ask is i've just bought myself a new Alpine 9853R with an Ipod controller and the bloke in the shop swore blind I do not need any adaptors for it to work. I know this is in the wrong section but I want to specifically ask all you R32 owners Also, does have an Ipod controller/Dension and if so, how did you get the cable into the glove box, did you have to drill a hole or something? Once again, Cheers in advance
jimmyp
I have a pretty awesome sound system in the R but have kept the standard head unit in as IMO removing it and sticking in an after market unit is naff and ruins the nice clean image. I have had 4 uprated door speakers, and have an amp which powers the standard head unit as as standard it just doesn't have the power to supply what the new speakers need, and i also have an amp powering the subwoofer in the boot. It really is good and better then the standard rubbish set up you get, but i'm into my music and like good quality sound so the money i spent is well worth it. Not sure if this post as any way helped but there you go.
Oatz
Totally agree, i too was concerned about any naff flashing, disco-light max power steroes but after alot of research and an hour chatting to the guy in the shop, i eventually went for a very clean, simple looking, black finished Alpine which knocks the socks of the now stored in 'the special filing cabinet' (the bin) Gamma. The best bit about the Alpine is you can fine tune the colour (there's something like 5000 different shades of colour) to give an exact match to the rest of the dash lighting which results in the blue and red effect standard to the rest of the dash (looks like factory spec imo) Originally I wanted to keep the Gamma and simply hook my ipod up but after doing a bit of research I realised the Gamma supplied was something pityful like 20watts! and the standard speakers are actually pretty damn good (my g'friend has a 1.6 golf and her's sounds really bassy in comparison). So instead of forking out £150 for a dension (which only plays playlists) I spend £250 and got the the Alpine plus an Alpine specific ipod controller which allows you to search in exactly the same way as if the ipod was in hand. (Artist, Genre, Song etc). The best bit about the Alpine is it has a touch sensitive scroller so you can scan through your tunes just a quickly as you can on the ipod itself. Just hope i can fit it now without too many problems.... so as I said if anyone has an experience of doing this please let me know? Cheers
mb
I think you will find it depends on the HU you already have. I only have experience of changing from Delta (the double DIN unit) to MFD (VW Sat Nav) my R32 used CanBus & the MFD didn't so if you have a similar set up you will probably either need a Canbus adapter (which Alpine probably sell) or pick up some of you feeds from other parts of the car. If you have the standard stereo I believe you will be OK - easiect way to tell is pull it out & see if you have the ISO standard plugs (in 2 parts one for speakers, one for power etc.) or a complex double plug (pic attached) HtH Martin
Big_Al
Oatz, I have the Alpine CDA9853R and KCA420i ipod apaptor installed in my R. I had the existing head unit and 6 cd taken out and the new unit installed in the lower section. You will need a adaptor to convert the VW plug to fit the Alpine(£10). I got a dash pocket from VW and had this installed above. Cable for the pod comes into this pocket(tray) and it sits in this. The alternative is you put it in the glove box as the pod is controlled via the head unit. Even though the ipod charges , it won't if it's completely flat. As you said, matching the colour of the unit to the dash display is a nice finishing touch. Sold Gamma and CD changer seperatley on Ebay for a total of £320. Mollox
Sounds right, you'll need the little adaptor thingy to convert VW to Alpine converters. I've had my Pioneer 9700R in my MKIV and now the S3 and I'd never have a factory unit again Bear in mind you'll also need an aerial signal booster as I think the Gamma has one built in and you'll struggle to get radio reception without it. £20 I think

[/ QUOTE ] £320! brilliant that means i'd be set to make almost £70 from upgrading! I've done it! has to be the easiest install i've ever come across, the old Gamma and disc changer just slid out first time using the sliced up credit card trick and the Alpine simply plugged straight in, no need for any adaptors or boosters etc The only problem i have is the Alpine is loosing its memory (and i haven't even fed it any yet) I presume i simply need to swap the red and yellow wires around (as both these wires have removable connectors unlike all the other wires which are hard wired, so to speak) Also, Big Al did you have to cut a hole in your aftermarket tray to get the connector to come through? As I think I need to buy one Cheers all
Big_Al
Oatz, no need to cut any holes as tray has vents in the top. Cable just slots through them. Have you sorted the colour yet?
Mollox
Not too sure about Alpine installation but on my Pioneers, if they're not "remembering" then its because you've got your power leads the wrong way round, as you say What aftermarket tray are you talking about cutting? On my MKIV I ended up cutting out the plastic "bar" that runs across the inside of the console, immediately above the climate control as that was the only way to get all the amp/changer/aerial and other cables in there

[/ QUOTE ] Sweet I was toying with idea of mounting the stereo in the top part of the dash but soon realised it would a) be closer to the heating fans (my old Pioneer in my VR6 used to get stupidly hot and on a long trip it would overheat) b) i wouldn't be able to use the drinks holder anymore So i've ended up mounting it in the same place as yours I've just about got the colour sorted but just out of interest what number did you end up programming it to? Tried tonight but as you found out, no luck in ipod mode. Read the manual , followed instructions but nothing. I think Alpine will be getting a call or email.
