A6 Avant - 1.9 or 2.5 TDI ???

I have been thinking of changing my car for a bit (2001 Passat 1.9 130 TDI Tip/Auto) and have been looking a lot at the A6 Avant (I want to go back to an estate after the saloon).

I want another auto as it is much nicer to drive in London.

I have heard people say that the 2.5TDi is not as good as the 1.9TDi is this true?

Obviously the insurance will be a bit more and presumably the servicing, but how much more roughly will the servicing be?

I cannot afford new and may have to have a generous milage as only really have 10K to spend. frown.gif

I have a 2004 A6 1.9tdi multi avant and find it absolutely great. It is not going to be as fast as the 2.5 but the fuel consumption is much better and f you remapped the ecu it could give you up to about 165-180 bhp as well. Drive both and see if you notice the difference. Second hand the 2.5 is more expensive as well so I suppose it comes down to personal choice. I have only had 1 service so far at 19000 miles and it cost around £250. My local audi dealer had a 2004 1.9tdi multi avant at £14995 so I suppose a 10k budget would get you a very nice used avant.

I have a 2.5 multitronic and had a manual 2.5 before that. The other car is an Ibiza 1.9tdi (130). When driven hard the audi returns low 30s. Driven gently maybe 40. Driven hard the Ibiza will return high 30s.

I haven't driven a 1.9 and 2.5 A6 back to back (only a short drive in a 1.9 a while back). I don't believe there to be that much difference between the two and therefore unless your mileage is going to be very low I would go for the 1.9.

Mind you, I do enjoy the 2.5....

Sounds like everyone is saying the 1.9 would be a better option then!!

The only reason for thinking about the 2.5 is that I thougt it may be smoother and better on the hills and there are quite a few round me! does that make sense ?

What reasons would it be better to have the 2.5 over the 1.9???

It depends what is most important to you, the 1.9 has lower running costs with better mpg and cheaper insurance. The 2.5 has better performance and a much nicer sound.

Another question is do you want quattro, as if you do you need to be looking at a 2.5.

I've got an A4 Avant 2.5TDi Quattro with 210bhp and im well happy with it. It has averaged 35mpg in the 6 months of had it mostly A/B road and urban driving.

I had a 2.5tdi multitronic A4 avant and it is very smooth, however, the car is very front heavy and it suffers for it.

When you get in a 1.9tdi you can feel the difference straight away, far lighter and handles better, but, you can feel the loss of power. Simple answer, get a 1.9 and a remap. I had my A6 1.9 REVO'd and it made all the difference, faster than a 2.5tdi and much better handling, also over 20k miles in the A4 2.5 I only got 31mpg, in the A6 1.9tdi (which is a heavier car) with the remap and doing the same sort of driving I get 36mpg, and you can easily get 40+.

Having said all that, the 2.5 is a lovely smooth engine, and if you get the Quattro you can remap it easily and then it really starts to sing and you sort of let it off the extra weight! wink.gif

I got the 2.5TDI and like you before had a 1.9TDI i found the 1.9TDI to be more noisy and not as smooth, the 2.5 multi is alot smoother ride and when you put your foot down it just goes and oyu dont feel any gear changes, but after my experience with multitronic i would stay clear of it, personaly im going over to a new passat 2.0TDI get more for your money then an Audi its the same engine as the new A4 2.0TDI 57Mpg

Rock and a hard place for me then!!!!!!!

By the sounds of what has been said above I would prefer the 2.5Tdi!

I do find mine noisy when pushed a bit and there is a delay in accelerating. I would like something smoother. It would be nice if it was quicker although I do not mean rocket fast but just faster and smoother together if that makes sense.

Only have to consider the costs increase now.

Thanks for all the advice any other thoughts would e welcomed!!

My wife has the 2.5tdi sport 180 bhp. Lovely car to drive.

I canned it to manchester and back for its RNS-E install (thanks Craigyb) and still managed to get 35mpg (excellent when compared to my car).

The only 1.9tdi i'd driven was a chipped one from my local dealer....Now that was FUN !!!

Pays your money....I guess the 2.5 may cost more to buy, but in theor should get more when you come to sell on.
