Dan32
Looking at the chrome mirror covers on Awesome's website. I know they won't fit an R32 but is that both or just the offside mirror, which on the R is smaller. Does the n/side fit and if so, would it be possible to get a RHD and LHD set and use both of the n/side covers? Don't worry, not going all chrome bling bling on you but thought they could be flatted to give brushed aluminium look.
Mook
The mirror housings and mirror glasses are smaller on the R32, whether LHD or RHD. Leave it as is Danno - it'll start looking like an S3/S4 with all that bling...
Dan32
You're probably right but I can't help fiddling! With the car that is, before anyone has a chance to chime in. The looks are a lot cheaper to mod than the engine/chassis and sometimes I just have to try these ideas I have floating about in my head!
mb
Agree with the leave it alone comments, but if you have to go ahead I think polo mirrors fit
Mook
If you really must try it Danno, get some second hand mirrors from a breakers yard for £20 or so and fit them. Changing the mirror unit itself is a lot easier than you think. Remove the door trim panel from the inside, lever off the speaker cover and there is a bolt behind it. Undo it, remove the wires and hey presto. Refitting is the same in reverse.
mb
If it is just the covers they come off from the outside of the car. There is a little plastic blank in the black plastic bit if you remove that there is a hole, put a thing screwdriver up the hole and release the spring catch (if you look up from below you can see it) then the mirror cover lifts straight upwards (is quite a tight fit so may need a little wobbling) HtH Martin

mattcony
[ QUOTE ] Agree with the leave it alone comments, but if you have to go ahead I think polo mirrors fit [/ QUOTE ] Is this the current model polo ? as I think you can get folding versions on the new polo. might be a cheap-er way of doing it. The 1 mod I wish was on the list for the Mk4 Cheers Matt
mb
Matt, That would be a good mod - especially as the switch gear even shows it as if you can fold them ! I have a spare cover so if you want to run the PN let me know & I will post teh PN for you Cheers Martin
Mook
[ QUOTE ] If it is just the covers they come off from the outside of the car. [/ QUOTE ] The problem is that the R32 mirror housings and mirror glasses are smaller than the mirrors on the other Mk4 Golfs, so the InPro ones won't fit, hence the suggestion of fitting mirrors from a GTI or similar - in which case you have to replace the lower plastic bracket as well, so it's quicker to replace the whole unit with one from a breakers yard - I recently went through this pain when some tw*t in an HGV very kindly smashed my passenger mirror off on the M6... Thanks VW...
mb
Aha - I thought (not sure where I heard it) that they used polo mirrors & therefore the polo covers would go straight !
