stevej69
Anyone used theM, sent an email and got a very nice response back yesterday. Thought being mobile he might be able to do a group deal at a meet or something? Email Below: Hi steve, Yes we can modify your 163 BHP A4 1.8T . If it is later than circa 2001 there is a good chance we can remap it through the main diagnostic socket .If it is earlier it may mean a physical chip change but the price is the same and so is the result. The gain is approx 25 BHP and with a healthy torque increase of about 25% . Some tuners quote a higher gain but bare in mind that the standard car is usually in the region of 170+ BHP standard so this results in some fibbing in actual gains achieved .Superchips quote the gain not the final BHP . This conversion can be carried out at your place of work or home at no extra cost . Cost of conversion £499 all in including VAT and fitting. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further info. Regards Paul Any Thoughts?
BenjaminTDI
So is this a superchips dealer? If so I would say definately go for it, I've not looked back since I had my re-map done by them.
stevej69
I would prefer an remap on my existing ECU as its less obvious if u know what i mean.
BenjaminTDI
You will struggle to find a company who can re-map it thru the OBD port if it's an early car. If it's the 163 I would assume it's at least an 02/03? There should be no problems doing it thru the OBD port, at a last resort they will bench flash it, which is exactly the same procedure (no chips are desoldered) just through the 10 pin connector after they have removed the ECU. stevej69
yes its a 52 plate, do you agree about the 170+ bhp bit? Also what about the group discount
BenjaminTDI
Yes often the cars are more powerful than quoted by the manufacturers. For example most of the 1.9TDI 130bhps are usually between 140-145bhp standard when put on a dyno. He is right about the fibbing though. For example if the re-map on your car will take the car to 203bhp, some tuners will quote it as a 40bhp increase, when it is in fact usually a 30bhp (as the car will be more like 170bhp). Superchips only quote on the gains you will get from their re-map. As for the group discount, I'm not sure, if pushed I would think he'd agree to doing it VAT free. Bare in mind if they have to remove the ECU it can take 2 hours or so for them to re-map the car so a meet may not be the best venue for a group buy. Mollox
20 mins tops to remove ECU and physically chip/solder and replace ECU I've seen it done enough times
BenjaminTDI
[ QUOTE ] 20 mins tops to remove ECU and physically chip/solder and replace ECU I've seen it done enough times [/ QUOTE ] Not on the later cars, they are using a very very strong threadlock on the tamperproof screws around the ECU housing which have to be removed using a heatgun. It can take 20 mins alone to remove these!!
Mollox
Interesting Have you got a pic of these new screws? Its been a couple of years since I've seen an ECU out, admittedly. Bloody old technology
BenjaminTDI
Sorry I don't have a pic and my poor 2MP camera probably won't capture them with sufficient detail. What screws are on the ones you are talking about?
Mollox
Off the top of my head I can only remember the gooey rubber sealant that needed heating and then reheating. No specific screws spring to mind so if there were any then they will have been very basic and off in seconds
Scotty
I've heard stories of ECU's being opened and not fully sealed again. This can then let water get in and cause problems. My TT and S4 (and most owners cars) are fine having it done but I'd agree the port flash method is better where possible.
wcs_80
Many Audi's from 2002 onwards use shearing security bolts, which secure a cage around the ECU. They must be slotted, and heat gunned to help soften the thread adhesive. Not the greatest job to do, but its fairly straight forward.
